4800+ REFUSES to o/c?

I'm stumped here. Just got my 4800+ today.

Iv'e got a Thermaltake Tsnami Dream case (w/ 6case fans), a slot cooler for my SLI'd 7800GTX's, and for CPU cooling using a Zalman cnps7700

REgardless of if I use the Zalman or the stock cooling solution, I can't overclock it - even from the default 200 HTT/FSB/whatever you want to call it, anymore than 205 and I am hard-locked out of windows. If I use Asus's o/c (called standard o/c), once again I can't get it to boot into windows if I use a value that goes above 205. If I use Asus's NOS option, if i set it to go above 205 once again I can't get into windows.

I'm afraid to touch the vcore because I can't figure out how I can't even get a 5% o/c out of my system....I can't even boot into fricken windows, let alone run stress tests!!!

Fyi, it's a 4800+, air cooling (see above for description), corsair pc4000, Asus a8n-sli premium

Heat isn't an issue (@ stock specs, under load it stays around 40deg. for CPU), voltage isn't an issue (from the PSU, it's 550watt sli-certified enermax), so I can't figure out why it REFUSES to boot into windows for a HTT above 205??????

i decided to go ahead and play with the vcore - with it at 1.40 (Although cpu-z reports that it flucuates between 1.36 and 1.402.......) i can hit a HTT of 218 stable (i can boot into windows and run multiple 3dmark runs....i'm going to try prime95 next). Max temperature is 46degrees, so that's like +5 from my previous max at stock, but still under 50 so I guess I'm okay leaving it there

Now off to prime95..........although I am a tad disappointed I couldn't leave the vcore on auto because like i said, after 205, nope, not getting into windows.

Did you drop the LDT multiplier to 3x or 4x?
Read the Eclipse's OC thread, great stuff :p

nope...i'll look into that

You do have cool'n'quiet disabled in the bios, right?

yep

Hmm, well this is weird - prime95 ran smoothly, no errors. I went to start up my computer today and it wouldn't let me into windows. Only worked when I set the voltage up a bit to 1.425

Any idea why prime95 would run w/o error but I get hardlocked out of windows from time to time???

how long did you let prime run for? That chip uses the same core as the 4400+ which i owned, i could only get 2.5 outa my 4400+ and u are starting at 2.4 so u might get 2.6ish maybe....mine was a voltage hog too, took 1.5 to get 2.6

i let it run like 3hrs last night. Hmmmm, very perplexing.

What would be the maximum voltage i'd want to skirt around? right no wi'm at 1.425 and i'm kind of hesitant to go any higher w/o something like water cooling

if you can't OC above a 205Mhz fsb, something is very, very wrong. My guess was that the mobo could not handle ht link above 1ghz..

Something is very wrong if you can't go above 205 stable. I have a 4800 running at 2.7Ghz. I've got mine running with 1.45v. Yes, the voltage does fluctuate between 1.47 - 1.48. I have found that with no load the board will actually add from 0.03v - 0.04v. With a steady load - 2 instances of Prime95 on separate cores - the board only adds approx 0.022v to the CPU.

I have found that the A8N-SLI Premium tops out approx 307MHz. At 1.45v, with load temps approx 45*C, the 4800 is comfortable at 2700MHz. My RAM, at 2.85v, maxes out approx 230MHz. Here are two setups I was playing around with:

Option 1:
HTT (FSB) = 225MHz
HT Link Multi = 4x, giving 900MHz (if 4x isn't stable, drop it down to 3x)
CPU Multi = 12x
RAM Speed = 400MHz (on A8N-SLI Premium this is its 1:1 - aka 200MHz 1:1 on other boards)
This gives you 2700MHz with the HT Link under 1000MHz. *NOTE: Actually, I have read that this board is good up to approx 1100MHz*

Option 2:
HTT (FSB) = 270MHz
HT Link Multi = 4x, giving 1080MHz (still under 1100MHz - drop to 3x if not stable at 4x)
CPU Multi = 10x
RAM Speed = 333MHz (5:6 ratio on this board - aka 166MHz 5:6 on some other boards)
This will also give you 2700MHz with higher HTT(FSB). But since you are running a 5:6 divider, RAM only runs at 225MHz. This is within spec for my RAM. I don't really know why I tried it this way. I guess I was experimenting to see if a higher HTT(FSB) would give me more performance. I think option 1 and 2 are about the same.

For your RAM - since you are running DDR500 (250MHz) - Here are two possible options:
Option 1:
HTT(FSB) = 250MHz
HT Link Multi = 4x, giving 1000MHz (drop to 3x if not stable at 4x)
CPU Multi = 11x
RAM Speed = 400MHz @ 1:1 (this is 200MHz 1:1 on some other boards)
This will give you approx 2750MHz running at a 1:1 ratio at your RAMs spec speed of 250MHz (DDR500 - PC4000). Your HT Link is also at 1000MHz which is fine. CPU voltage should be 1.45v - 1.4625v. YMMV on where it wants to be stable.

Option 2:
HTT(FSB) = 300MHz
HT Link Multi = 3x, giving 900MHz (4x gives 1200MHz - you can try it if you're feeling lucky)
CPU Multi = 9x
RAM Speed = 333MHZ @ 5:6 (this is 166MHz 5:6 on some other boards)
This will give you 2700MHz with your HT Link still under 1000MHz. Your RAM should be running at spec also because of the 5:6 divider. This is also at CPU voltage of 1.45v - 1.462v - YMMV on where it wants to be stable.

With the last two options you will be running your RAM at spec speeds - 250MHz (DDR500/PC4000). Which means you do not have to relax timings. You can run your RAM at spec timings and spec voltage. You might also want to increase HT Link and Chipset voltage. The A8N-SLI Premium only has one higher voltage settings for either.

YMMV with the parts you have. But what I've given you should start you off. I guess things just depend on how much voltage you are willing to add and at what temps you are comfortable with. I'm running a Thermaltake Big Typhoon. I idle at approx 30*C and load at approx 40*C+. MAX I have seen is 45*C. And that was with two Prime95 - one on each core - running for over 24-hrs.

Check this post out: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?p=1027479689#post1027479689
That is what I used to get stable at 2.7GHz at the voltages and temps I am willing to live with. Obviously I would like to go faster. But that will have to wait until I get better cooling and RAM.

Good Luck,
Alpha

Tried those, nothing worked (i.e., let me into windows) :(

The abolsute best I can get out of my system is to tighten the ram to 2.5-3-3-7-1T and then turn on AI NOS to 5% (it's weird.....any higher than 5% and I can get into windows, but games hardlock after 10-15seconds, even though heat is defiantely not an issue)......that nets me 13,500 for a 3dmark05 score, so I guess I should be happy.

I just can't figure out why it doesn't like to o/c at all....maybe I just got a sucky Toledo core on this chip?

btw, here's what happens, regardless of how I set the voltage and htt multiplyer

BIOS posts
RAID BIOS is shown
driver device addresses are shown
Windows loading screen comes on
USB mouse powers on
Windows loading screen blanks out
(at this point then windows desktop would load if it's stable)
...............................Nothing, it just sits there, unable to load the desktop

I don't know why :(

1. have you read the oc guide??
2. do not use ASUS oc software, use the apps mentioned in the oc guide...

edit: do you have the latest bios and nvidia drivers? did you lock pci speed? try changing you sata hdd drive port to 3 or 4

if none of the above works try an clean install of windows..

1 - yes
2- i don't
3- yes (latest bios and chipset)
4- havn't tried that yet
5- don't think it's my hds that are causing the problem.....(i have sata 1 and 2 for my raid array, 3rd non-raid hd on sata 3)
6- doesn't matter if i reinstall windows.

Ok, this is going to take some time to see what your system should be able to do. I posted a link in my other post above. Run through the OC guide and write down your MAX for your board, CPU, and RAM. Remember that this will take some time. Be patient and post back here with your MAX stable board, CPU, RAM speeds. Then we can see what we have to work with here.

It is just odd that we have the same board and CPU and you can't get anything better... hmmm. Maybe swap out RAM? Well, that's for later. Right now just find the MAX speeds for what your board, CPU and RAM can handle from here http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?p=1027479689#post1027479689

Your board should at least be able to reach well past 250 HTT(FSB) as it is the same board I have, and I got it up to max 307. As stated in the guide - "if you can't break 250mhz, something is wrong."

I mean you should be at least able to run at 2.5GHz. Running your RAM at stock timings and voltage (spec for the RAM - NOT specified by the board (AUTO = NO)). Run a CPU multi of 10x and maybe a slight CPU voltage bump to 1.4125v. Run the RAM at a 1:1 ration - RAM Speed = 400MHz on the A8N-SLI Prem. Set the HT link multi to 4x. This will give you only a 100MHz oc. But the 4800 should be able to do it! If not, something is wrong here. I mean I know the whole "your mileage may vary" bit... but something is definately wrong if you can't even get 100MHz oc.

Check out the link. Run through the steps. Write down results. Post back here.

Set the HTT link to 2x, ram to stock timings. Cpu multi to 5, voltage to 1.4125

Used clockgen to get the htt up to 300 then stopped (no errors or crashes, just didn't see the need to go any higher)

Reset, put the cpu multi to 12

Used clockgen, hit prime95 error after 1minute with htt at 215. Hit prime95 error after 2minute w/ htt at 211. Stable with HTT at 208.

Reset everyhting like the HTT link and ram timings, set HTT to 208....can't boot into windows.

My toledo core sucks ass

do you have any other suggestions for settings to get over 2.7 gig?

sorry it was a long thread and i didn't read all

Usually when the overclock is limited so severely it can be traced back to the motherboard. IDK, maybe you are best off trying out a different mobo if you are really intent to overclock.

this is my 2nd mobo - last week i had a different one (asus 8an-sli premium, but an earlier version) and I hit the exact same problem. I figured it was my ram (was using kingston value ram at that time)...........turns out not. I just don't think my core can oc/ very well

It should go further than that...

May i ask why you went with ASUS over the DFI NF4 when overclocking is a main goal?

i like asus :D

...........plus o/c'ing isn't really my main goal; i figured a 10% o/c would be more than possible regardless of board.

Like I said - i'd bet my hat that this is an issue relating to the CPU itself - w/ cpu multi lowered to 5, I can hit 300+ in the htt. With cpu multi at 12, I can't even hit 215.

a CPU topping out at 215? That would be a pretty damn bad core, and you've got a 4800+, it shouldn't be that bad. The worst CPU i've had might have been my 3200+ s754. But even that did 11x223 on the stock heatsink.

I don't even have stock cooling - using a Zalman.....my CPU is nice and cool, it just doesn't want to o/c

forgive me as i did read most of this but not in greatest detail possible, you can hit 300+htt with 5x multi, what about 9x 10x to see if you can get more out of it?

if i remember correctly dont use the SATA ports 1 and 2 but use 3 and 4. somthing about them not locking their speed or somthing crazy. give the core some more juice, i ran 1.65V(norm 1.50V ish) on my 3200 clawhammer on air several times and its still going oddly(any higher and windows would BSOD for some reason) YES im abusive to my CPU, just another excuse to get a new one

....Interesting.....do you have more info on it (the sata ports......i can't imagine that they would limit my o/c abilities....)

Btw, yea, somehow if stock vcore is 1.35ish i don't think i want to go to 1.65, haha ^_^

I upped the vcore to 1.45 (highest I want to go) and I couldn't boot into windows, even at a HTT of 215.

Theres plenty of reports of the sata 1/2 issure where overclocking is a concern and no one really has an answer why. The best explanation ive come across is the way the controller (s) communicate, ports 1/2 are for instance on the nvidia nforce and ties into the pci bus which doesnt truely lock with the pci lock feature wheres 3/4 use the secondary onboard controller like dfi for example use silicon image i think and these actually lock so when your pushing higher htt speeds they ar enot affected by the various htt settings.

Sorry for the late reply. I was in school.

Anyway, what BIOS are you running? I went to Asus site and have the beta BIOS installed. My board originally shipped with the 1009 BIOS. I now have the 1011.001 beta BIOS installed. You might want to give that a try if you are comfortable flashing your BIOS.

Also, I completely forgot about this. I DO NOT have my SATA drive in port 1 or port 2. My Raptor is connected to SATA Port 3. The posts above are correct in that most boards seem to have SATA Ports 1 & 2 unlocked. Ports 3 & 4 should be locked. However, I've only known the SATA Port 1 or Port 2 to become a problem around 229 HTT(FSB) though. You - keyword next - shouldn't be hitting the SATA port problem so soon. But since we are still trying to rule out your 4800 as the problem here; might as well move the drives over onto Ports 3 & 4.

Also, I have read that you may want to try uninstalling your mem and then re-seating them again. This, for some strange reason, fixes some stability problems. Also, I didn't get to ask you this, but do you have anything plugged into your PCI slots? If you do, make sure you lock the PCI to 33MHz. You don't have to worry about the PCI-E slot. I've run up to a 270 HTT and the PCI-E slot stays locked at 100MHz.

One more thing. If you have Speedfan (I still haven't gotten MBM5 to run on this board), check your voltages. Make sure you are not getting any crazy fluctuations on your 12v rails.

Heh, what are the odds of getting the "runt of the pack" 4800?! Hell, if you were within a couple miles of Reseda, CA I'd pay you a visit and see what the heck is going on over there ;)

Well, if you have already gone through Eclipse's OC guide, there isn't much I can suggest. You are already running on water. What temps are you running? I saw in your other thread what you did to get to 2.7GHz.

What are your max settings for HTT, CPU, and RAM? How much voltage and at what temps are you willing to go to?

I stopped at 2.7GHz because I had reached my target max voltage and max temps. Pretty cool actually. Before I built this rig I already told myself I'll only go as far as 1.45v and 45C max if I decided to oc. With my Big Typhoon I reached 2.7GHz at my pre-determined max vcore and load temps! So I was like, ok, I think I'll stop now.

I live in Calgary (alberta - canada)....you're free to come up here to visit me ^_^

I locked the PCI bus and played with everything, it just isn't going. The only thing I havn't tried is to move to sata port 3 and 4, but that's not feasible right now - i had my friend build my rig for me (too lazy ^_^ ) and he did the wiring job from hell - to remove my SLI'd video cards took almost 1 1/2hrs because of all the wiring..........then to get to the SATA ports, hehe, that'd probably be another hour..........I'm going to look into getting it re-wired with longer wires so they can be zip-tied out of the way, and then I'll try the SATA idea.

OMG - I think I finally got it to overclock a bit - for the hell of it I updated to Asus's BETA bios and now it's actually moving a little bit.

Using HTT link 3x, vcore 1.4375, multi 12x, htt 224 it's actually stable.,.......prime95 has been running w/o errors, and the CPU temperature is stable @46degrees.....ram is at 400mhz@2.5-3-3-7-1T

Assuming this holds, 2 questions

1 - is a vcore of 1.4375 'okay' for using a Zalman air cooling solution? Stock is like 1.36, and using CPU-z i've seen it flucuate between 1.42 and 1.48. Think I should be okay in that range?

2 - I shouldn't have any problems with HTT link at 3x? I've read it can even be at 1x and not suffer at all, but i want to make certain

oh boy oh biy, i'm getting all giddy ^_^

edit: I wasn't really happy w/ the vcore so I cut the htt down to 222 and the vcore to 1.425..........figured it was worth losing 24mhz to cut the vcore a bit..........but at either vcore (1.425, 1.4375) I should be okay (i.e., not have to worry about the chip failing on me for the next 4-5yrs)

1 - You have your vcore at ONLY ( :p ) 1.4375? Hehehe, I've got mine running at 1.45v. I've had Prine95 run over 24hrs with that much voltage and my CPU temps never went past 45C. But you're already hitting 46C with 1.43v though. I think that's probably max vcore for you. A lot of people will say that temps up to 50C is ok with MAX at 55C. But 50C for me is just a little too warm.

2 - You are not going to have any problems with the HT Link at 3x. Actually with 225 you can set it at 4x for an even 900MHz. With your last edit at 222, you are safe with setting the HT Link at 4x. I have taken my A8N-SLI Prem up to 1080MHz on the HT Link; Prime95 stable for over 12hrs. I didn't bother running Prime95 much longer since I was just testing if I could go over 1000MHz on this board. Also, I've read some reviews where this board will actually handle up to approx 1200MHz on the HT Link. Your HT Link speed is the HTT(FSB) * HT Link Multi. So with your 222 HTT(FSB) * 3 = 666MHz for the HT Link. 222 * 4 = 888MHz. I'm pretty sure you're safe.

The 4800 is pretty fast enough. I will probably clock it back to stock for now until I get my water setup. I mean I'm all hungry for more speed and have this need to go just a tiny bit faster. But temps are holding me back. Actually, I'll probably wait for OCZs Phase Change Unit :D http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=4272 It seems to be a lot cheaper than most other phase cooling solutions... almost bordering a very good water setup.

well supposedly the vcore max for air should be around 1.55 so if u stay under that your fine....

and a heavily oc'ed proc should last around 15 years so dont worry about it not lasting for 5 years
