Could someone do me the honour of explaining why there are different brands of each graphics card? What actually is the difference between them and is there a site that compares them? I have looked, but if I didn't look hard enough, or have missed something obvious, I apologise for the stupid question. I am extremely interested though.

My 480 is an Inno3D, and it is a beast. It plays every game (I have all the latest ones) on max settings, in S3D, with decent AA at 30+ fps always. With slightly lowering the AA, I can easily jump to 60fps.

(using it with the 2500k i5 @4.4Ghz)

Did I get lucky choosing Inno3D (extremely lucky actually - it was very cheap when I got it), or is it just a good one?

Thanks a lot everyone.

Different manufacturers are licensed (I believe) to make certain cards from either nvidia or ATI/AMD. The manufacturers receive specs for what the reference card will be, in this case, a GTX 480, and produce those with their branding.

Those same manufacturers are able to produce different versions of the card with higher clock and shader speeds, or different methods of cooling, or some other way that differentiates from the reference design.

Different manufacturers will produce similar reference cards which will give similar performance to other brands, along with different warranty/support options.

1. Reference cards - cards made according to Nvidia or AMD spec - are identical. What differentiates the companies selling these identical products are (a) support and (b) binned versions that are factory overclocked to run faster.

2. Companies also differentiate themselves with non-reference cards. Some of them are better (Asus DC, MSI Lightning), others are cheaper components and cheaper price (XFX non-reference).
