48-50C Idle temperatures? Ehh.

Hi everyone,

Can you guys tell me how much of a temperature change I can gain if I install an XP-120 w/ Nexus & an Arctic Silencer/ Zalman ZMOP1 fan?
Right now my configuration is :

3.2E Prescott @ 3.5. C0 stepping, which I heard pelts out 130W of heat..?
2x PC4000 512mb, DDR500 (Running at DDR500)
ATi Radeon 9800 Pro
2x Raptors 74gb
Thermaltake Purepower 560w (Sigh.. temporary until I get a new one).

My idle temperature is !48C!. Full load.. who knows, scared to stress it right now (most likely 70C full load). I'm running a Zalman CNPS7000AlCu and the 9800 Passively Cooled by a Zalman ZM80D. How big a change will I get in temps if I swap the PSU (I think the Purepower is exhibiting LOTS of heat too, goddamn inefficient PSU; thermalcrap), slap in an XP-120 w/Nexus, and a slim fan on the ZM80D? If the temperatures are still that bad I might have to switch to water cooling (third try). Ambient temperature is around 22C.

Assume everything is installed correctly; I've done a multitude of builds and this prescott is amazingly hot! The case is a Coolermaster Wavemaster; 2x intake, 2x exhaust (intake in front, exhaust in top/back).

What motherboard? Maybe the sensors are a bit wonky. Prescotts have always liked to run hot... though that's a little too hot, even with a Zalman 7000 sitting on it. You sure you installed the heatsink correctly? What thermal compound did you use and how did you apply it?
 
Err; Arctic Silver 5, installed by spreading it. Have done countless other installations without any problems, know the CNPS7000 installation by heart.

The sensors shouldn't be that far off; the Purepower is wailing like mad when idling, hot air exhausting from both PSU and top exhaust.
 
I'm running a similar setup to you,

3.2e D0 stepping @3.71ghz 1.41 V in bios, speedfan, mbm and cpu-z say 1.39V
xp120 + silenx120mm
abit ic7-g
hyperx 2x512 4300
6800 gt

I'm idling at 54C according to speedfan, 44C according to an external thermal probe. At load I'm hitting 65C and 55C respectively.

I know I'm hitting throttling temp when I push 3.8-3.9 because of increased voltage I have to add with the mhz. I can boot at 4.0ghz but the throttling is so ridiculous that windows is unusable.

I have an antec p160 case and temps are fairly mild 27C-34C depending on what part of the case you're reading.

Also I just reapplied the as5 on my cpu so I sure to drop maybe 3-4C more after the 200hr break in period.
 
Something's definately wrong with these Prescotts.. could the 3.2E C0 and D0s be the hottest chips out there (idle)?
 
Prescott's are hot, its been know since they came out. It's why there's no 4.0ghz from intel, they couldn't run 4 without too much heat and voltage and still be suitable for oem use.

Thing is, it can run this hot at idle and still be stable... it can hit 74C and then throttle, but it won't lock. The nw would lock well before it hit throttling.

I think for the hell of it since I can boot at 4 I may look to peltier or water cooling to see if I can join the 4.0ghz (non throttling club).
 
How's the rest of your case's cooling? A blowhole in the top of the case and a side vent directly over the processor could help a bunch.
 
I have a blowhole on the top yes. I placed an order on a S12-430 and a XP-120 right now, and I have a Sunon 120mm 89CFM just sitting here (I also ordered a SilenX 120mm to test temperature difference / noise difference).

Hopefully it will make a big difference. Although people have noticed small changes from a Zalman CNPS7000A => XP-120 on non Prescott rigs, I've spoken to a few people who benefit from over 10C full load temperatures on their Pressies with this swap.

My case is a Wavemaster; although not the best airflow case, the case temperature is always around 30C.
 
I had the same problem with a 3.2 D0 I had a while ago. The thing just ran really hot. idled 45-48, load was up to 70 with a Xp-90 on it. I went ot water to keep the damn thing nice and cool.
