So I picked up a 4790k this weekend on the cheap. I already had a board, ram, etc. So why not. I am rather inexperienced to overclocking on Haswell / Z97 and was surprised at the voltage / temp relationship compared to my old 3570k / Z77.

My motherboard is an MSI PCMATE Z97, Cooler = Evo 212, and Ram is Crucial Battlesticks overclocked from CL9 / 1600 to CL 11/ 2133. TIM is Arctic Silver Ceramique 2 (only stuff I had left laying around).

After playing around a little, I set my multiplier to 44 and CPU volts to 1.1 which ended up in a BSOD in Prime 95. Raised to 1.125 for stability, and I got the following results after 15 min of Prime 95 small FFTs:

Should I be concerned about temps at all? I know alot of people avoid using Prime 95 on the haswell and up due to the usage of AVX and high temps.. I thought I'd throw the worst case scenario at it.

Those temps do seem high, but not surprising if you are running a version of P95 higher than 26.6. The newer versions run the AVX code on the Floating Point Unit (FPU) math coprocessor, which produces unrealistically high temperatures.

Rerun small FFT's using 26.6 or lower and report back. My guess is you'll see max temps that are 10-20C lower.

Running 44x100MHz on default (adaptive?) voltage (~1.168v -1.184v), same cooler as yours, CPU temp about 55C playing WoW.

Lowered my volts to 1.12, completely stable at 4.4 Ghz and temps are slightly lower.. Must be bad TIM.. No plans on removing the lid... Running Valley Benchmark gives me 70 degrees.

There are several later bios versions available, so I might try to DL the latest one and report back.
