Just got a 4770K and it's in a single loop with my 7970. I have it overclocked to 4.5 with vcore of 1.21. At ldle it runs at 45. When I run Intel burn test, it gets to 100 degrees quickly. I'm certain the water block is seated correctly. It's very tight and there is absolutely no looseness to it. I'm using a Koolance 380-I water block with IC7 thermal paste. Any ideas?

Delid your CPU first of all. Unless you have a press this will require a scary amount of force. You will probably think you're going to destroy it before the IHS comes off it you use a hammer. Read one of the many guides available for finer details.

Once delidded you can either direct mount in which case you would want to be careful, as the die can chip, or remount the IHS with your own thermal paste. Note that the IHS will rest only on the die after you remove the silicon. You may want to lap your IHS if you use it because they're not very flat. Once you do this it should idle in the 30s if you have reasonable ambient temps and your loop is properly specced and not overloaded by your GPU.

Temps sound about right. I hit 98°C using LinX 0.6.5 with my 4770K overclocked to 4.3GHz 1.2v.

The only way to beat the heat is to delid your CPU. :(

Welcome to Haswel, an overclocking let-down.

Your only options as noted are de-lid, run direct-die or IHS with good compound (and lapping), or dial down the vcore and settle for a meager overclock.

Overall yes a let down but still fun to over clock and delidding is alot of fun if you are into modding.

a little off topic as im still building my 4770k system w/ wc. im thinking about delidding it and running ek precision mounting directly on the die. is there something i need to do to protect the rest of the chip?

My chip is temperamental. It was stable at 4.5 at 1.21 volts for two weeks. Starting yesterday it's no longer stable at that setting. Now I can only get it to 4.2 at 1.3 volts. I refuse to increase voltage beyond 1.3; So looks like I will have to settle for 4.2 at 1.3; And hope it's stable at that setting for good.

My delidded 3770k runs cool at 1.32v at 4.6ghz on a true. Delidding makes more of a difference than what cooler that you use with these chips.

Did you leave the sticker on the block?
...I did that once and was getting 80C idle temps on my i7 950.

No. in real world use, at full load the temps doesn't go past 70C. Artificial test like IBT and Prime95 apparently is not recommended to use for stress testing 4770K. Asus and Intel themselves advise against it. I downloaded Aida64 (recommended because it is one of the recommended stress testers for 4770k). with Aida64, I max out at 70C under stress.

TBH sounds like either a)You didnt get a great spread on your thermal paste or b)You got a shitty draw on CPUs. 1.21v is nothing tbh on water. You should be able to push 1.3+ and be under 100 with any decent chip. It doesnt even have to be golden. How much rad space / type of fans on the rads do you have also? Could make a difference as well.

That was my first concern as I didn't know about the IHS issue. A high end gpu and cpu on a 120 or 240 probably wont do much to get you to great temps.

definately not issue with thermal paste spread. I applied it twice to be certain. and I'm using AP14 typhoon fans on a RX360 rad.

Are your 7970 temps abnormal at all? If so it may be something with the pump, but if not, welcome to Haswell. I experienced the same joy when I had a 3770k, only delidding would help.

I would agree to "Welcome to Haswell" if he wasnt pushing 1.2v through his CPU. Thats an extremely small number of Volts to be pushing 100C. TBH if everything is fine in your loop and you know the paste is on correctly I would consider RMAing it. You should be able to push 4.5 on 1.2v on air much less water. The chips run hot but not that hot.

7970 temps are ridiculously low. 35C idle, 48C at full load. Yeah, I've resigned myself to the fact that only delidding will lower my max temps.
