if your going to upgrade from the 470 you might as well just go with the 580. not really a huge upgrade going to the 570(480)..

What resolution are you playing at?

A 470 with a good OC reaches a stock 570, and a 570 with a good OC reaches a 580. Selling your 470 would get you around ~$200, so you would spend around $150 on a 570 and $300 on a 580. IMO not worth it, it's not a big enough upgrade.

If this is a step-up from EVGA, then tell us how much your going to have to pay to ugrade. If not, well... never mind. :p

I upgraded from 470sli to 580sli and (apart from the performance increase) the most impressive thing is the lack of noise, night and day.

I hate when people make these bogus comparisons. Guess what? A 580 can be overclocked too. In fact, if it's overclocked, it'll go further than an overclocked 570 - imagine that!

thanks guys
i was thinking maybe i should wait for the 585 or 590 or 595? any info on that?

The 570 will serve you well @ that resolution, however, a 580 will chew up everything you throw @ it. It really comes down to how much coin you are willing to part with.

I wasn't implying that he should OC and not get it.

Look at 1920 x 1200

Another 470 would run him ~$220, and 470 OC SLI is about twice as fast as a 570. A 570 still has the same VRAM.

470 = 82%
570 = 100% for $150
580 = 115% for $300
470 SLI = 160% for $220

At 1920 x 1200 I don't think 1.5GB VRAM is really necessary. If he wants more frames, 470 SLI would be the best price/perf. in his situation.

thanks guys

580 came out a month ago, if that. 570 was like a week ago or something like that.

Why would you be concerned about the next cards already? We won't see anything faster for at least the winter, probably closer to early summer. If they release a faster card then in the first place. Theres a decent chance the 580 will be the fastest Nvidia card for almost a year.
They still have to refresh everything else before the 580 gets replaced.

GTX470 is a solid card. I have one myself. :D

I don't plan on upgrading for awhile, at least until the GTX580 has huge price drop or the next latest and greatest single GPU card smashes current video card performance.

In the mean time I'm going to liquid cool my GTX470 and improve my UT3 skills.

I'm looking to ditch my GTX470 for £150 to get the 6970 now, was considering going to the GTX570 but the 6970 is a damn impressive card for the money. However you're set on nVidia and 3d so i'd probably go for the 2x580 because of the extra VRAM that you'll need at a 3 monitor res.
