470-SLI vs 5870-CF

im currently comparing these two options for a new build and I read that with the new drivers the 470-SLI smokes the 5870-CF so any input would greatly appreciated.
 
Last comparison I saw put SLI scaling about 10% better than CF scaling - so the 5870 CF will probably still be faster than GTX 470 SLI, even though the 470 will scale slightly better.
 
It definitely smokes if that's what you're looking for.

Why are people so crazy about the heat of the GTX cards? the GTX 470 runs at the same heat as the 8800GT cards did, and no one had issues with those, I had them in SLI for 3 years... the GTX is hotter than the ATI but that has nothing to do with performance, if your system can take the heat and you don't care about an extra $10 in electric bills per year, then why does it matter? if you are a tree hugger, you shouldn't have a computer at all!
 
470 SLI performance is pretty good but it certainly doesn't 'smoke' 5870 crossfire. 470 SLI performance will beat 5870 crossfire in the usual Nvidia favored games such as Batman, Metro2033, and Dirt 2 however.

You don't have to be a treehugger to have ears. The GTX 4xx series is significantly louder than equivalent Radeon 5xxx cards, particularly when you have 2 of them in SLI. Now if you're willing to invest to put them on water, then noise won't be a factor. But otherwise it will be a valid consideration for many users.
 
unless your whole case is on water your case fans are probably louder than the gpu fans! I never hear my gpu, never did with my 8800GT SLI setup either, I just hear the sweet sound of 8 case fans.

unless your fans are whining or you have paper thin walls do you really need a silent computer? just put on some headphones or crank your sound up

GPU fans are generally much smaller, and operate at higher RPMs. What kind of hash are you smoking to block out that noise? The GTX4XX have tiny ass delta fans.

considering i can get both for around 300 bucks per card I'm wanting the better performer of the two.

my understanding is the 5870 is a more powerful card but given how well the Nvidia 470 scales in SLI, that it out performs the 5870 in a SLI vs CF setup

It can, however that is only the case in some titles. It just depends on which games you play.

Do you care about PhysX or CUDA? Do you fold? How many monitors do you run and how sensitive are you to noise? What case and what kind of cooling do you have? Are you concerned about power usage at all or just raw performance?

Once you answer those questions I think the answer will be sufficiently clear. Personally I would only go with 2x GTX470s if they have the Twin Frozr cooler as those are supposed to run much cooler and quieter than the reference design.
 
I don't give a dam about PhysX or Cuda, I don't fold. I run 2 monitors and a laptop, I'm a multi-boxer when it comes to mmorpgs; so I usually have 2 game clients running at once. I'm air cooling specs below.

Corsair 800D case, Inside the case I have 6 fans 3 intake and 3 outtake.
8800gts (old school version with 1 gig of ram)
i7 920 with / Corsair H50
6 gigs of ddr3 @ 1600
EVGA X58 motherboard TRI-SLI

okay here is one I found, granted this is with old NVidia drivers which have been updated with better performance in a lot of these games, so maybe it does "smoke" the 5870 CF in same games.

But there is an example of Metro where it does blow away all other cards at max res. and it seems like with AA it performs better than ATI cards... There are also games where the 5870 CF "smokes" the GTX 470 SLI...

I think even with the older drivers in the review here, it does show the best "value" is GTX 470 SLI, because it almost always beats the 5850 CF and usually is pretty close to the 5870s if not higher in some games like Metro... I don't think you can get a pair of 5870 cards for under $600 (yes you can find a pair of GTX 470 for under that, check the hot deals and I am sure within a week you will have two of them for around $560, I got one from newegg for $265 after rebate).

You're talking to a guy who just had Tri-Fire 5870s. Not a tree hugger but that setup uses less electricity than two GTX 480s and not that much more than two GTX 470s. I will have no problem going to Nivida once they refresh their cards but I can't just base my decision on performance alone. Three 5870s created too much heat and noise on air so I downgraded. Going Fermi after that won't make any sense. I will watercool and buy a Corsair AX1200 this fall. If Fermi continues to be a power, heat and noise maker it will be solved by me going water and getting a higher wattage PSU.

anyone got a suggestion for a 470 I can pick up for under 300? i see a few listed in hotdeals but i have only bought EVGA and the only EVGA I see is listed for 330ish. since I plan to sli i really dont want to pay over 600 for the pair.
 
You can't have it all. If you want a card substantially under MSRP you have to go with second tier vendors.\

Has the BCB program died yet? Perhaps you can factor that in and try to sell a game it comes with, over at Tiger Direct - maybe.

Got stuck with an extra 5870 because a local buyer fell through, so why not use it in the mean time. 150fps+ @ 2560x1600 maxed in BFBC2 was a good laugh.

well Dell has upped their base price on it to $360 (was $350) BUT if you click on their small business section and sign up for the e-mails they will send you a 20% off coupon. Make sure you add the GTX 470 to your cart from the small business section and apply the coupon, now its $288 plus tax (not sure about free shipping anymore)

ALSO, Dell does 10% BCB for small business but I am not sure if it will apply to this, it doesn't say what it includes and excludes, but its worth a try (search bing.com for dell, maybe try dell direct or dell pc and you should see the link for it). could get your price down to $259 plus tax (and shipping?) if it works

Heat 8800GT=105W

No, TEMPERATURE is measured in C or F. HEAT is measured in watts. Temperature is not heat and vice versa. Heat is the amount of energy leaving the card and entering the room (more or less in this context). Temperature is how hot the GPU is. A hotter GPU does not necessarily produce more heat. Likewise, a GPU producing more heat is not necessarily hotter.

It's not tannat's fault you don't know basic physics.

and if you look at that link and I can tell you since I had 2 8800GTs, they use more power than a single GTX 470 does, heat, temp, everything was more with them!

Or, haven't you considered that they actually may complain about heat, but some don't get it and think they are complaining about the specific temperature of the card?

And I took the 105W spec from nvidias homepage. So, if that is wrong. Don't blame me.

see the above post with the definition, as I have always understood it, Engery gives off heat, heat is measured in tempature, Energy can be measured in Watt ;)

When people ask what the heat index is, they don't say 200W, they say X degrees, yes its the energy from the sun creating that heat but the heat is measured in tempature

You're only confirming what we are saying.

Of course you need a temperature difference for transfer of heat between two bodies.

Watt is just the transfered heat per second, or energy per second if you want.
temperature is only a relative point and don't tell you the stored heat (energy)in the body. For that you need to know the mass and the specific heat (which is a different unit) of the body.

Uh, heat is not wattage either, that's power. Heat is energy, joules. Wattage measures the energy output over time periods.

Heat is definitely not temperature either. A 5870 operating at 80C might be the same temperature as a GTX 480 operating at 80C, but the GTX 480 would make the ambient temperature rise due to the amount of heat dissipated from the card.

When people talk about how hot a card is, they are generally concerned with ambient temperature effects. When people talk about the temps a card is getting, they are concerned with operating temperatures at load which could detract from the lifespan of the card.
