I was screwing around with my first overclocked computer, and I thought you guys would get a kick out of this. It's a shame we can't do it with the stuff they make these days. The machine is an Asus P5A that has a modified bios and an AMD K6III-400@500 with 384megs of Crucial 100mhz SDRAM@147mhz. It is aircooled with a modified Alpha heatsink, and it runs 41C under a full load. The memory chips never run hot, either. It has been going strong since '97? Anyway, those were the days. :D

"OMG NEW BH-5 that does DDR650 @ 3.1 Volts cas 2-2-2!!"

Meanwhile, my BH-5 is taunting me. NewEgg sent me an open and/or refurb DDR Booster among other things, so I didn't even plug it in- just called and demanded an exchange. My DFI goes up to 3.1V without it, and my RAM is doing DDR498 with the board maxxed out. I wish I could get that last 1MHz out of it, dammit! Now I have to wait a week...

Well, keep your new machine as your main one, and get an old Asus P5A or Abit BP6 to play around with. They are great fun, and can be an overclocking challenge, especially the BP6. I have more fun with them than the new stuff because they were made in the day when people actually modified the bios and cut heatsinks to pieces. It was before you could get all the fancy stuff that's around now. They are sort of like having antique target rifles, or a 1956 Porsche. :D

I am actually amazed at the practical functionality of these old computers when loaded with Win2K or SUSE 9. The Abit will absolutely scream with NT4 as the operating system, and an overclock of 366@650 is possible with a lot of effort...or so I've heard. Mine has 400s@550. New multiprocessor boards won't overclock worth a damn, if at all. :(
 
i just noticed that the bandwidth is negative. i find that rather curious.

also goes to show how awesome micron based ram is :D

Yep, it shows as negative. That's a glitch in the Everest program that I used for the benchmark. I have also noticed that with some other older AMD machines that use ALADDiN chipsets. The same program also shows the CPU at half the speed that it actually is.

Micron is awesome. It's reliable, too.
 
hehehe, nice glitch. i have some crucial ballistix. managed 262mhz at 2.5-2-2 the other day, and that's with a sucky memory controller. :D
