My trusty i7 920 is still running strong but I have the upgrade bug. I plan on going crossfire with 7970 and r9 280X, gaming on 1920x1080 at 120Hz. I heard BF4 multiplayer benefits from extra cores. Would the 6core 4930K be overkill for gaming or would the 4670K be more than enough to power my crossfire cards?

Can only attest to what I'm running. 4670k with SLI 560ti's and it's smooth as butter at 1920x1080.

On Ultra? With MSAA? In multiplayer? At 1080p 4X MSAA will use over 2GB of VRAM.
Vandit, the extra cores will only benefit you in the multiplayer, whether it's two more physical cores for the hexacore or the 4 extra threads from HT.

You want to Crossfire a 7970 and R9 280x? That can't be done. They need to be the same series card but can be different manufacturers.

If money is not a problem then go for the 4930K or save a few bucks and get the 4770K. You will want the Hyperthreading for multiplayer. A second 7970 would be a nice upgrade. I would probably do that cause they are pretty cheap now that the flagship cards are out. If you need the latest and greatest get a SINGLE R9 290x. At 1080p you will not need to crossfire that card. Even at 120hz. I personally don't think this game is worth the upgrade.

Yes. 1080 gaming isn't as intensive as it used to be.

Extra cores help, yes. But my 4670k isn't being taxed at 100%.

And the 7970 and 280x will crossfire. Maybe OP was confused.

Hmm I saw a few MP benchmarks showing VRAM over 2GB for 1080p. I guess it varies. If he plans on going CF a beefier CPU will definitely help, especially with the poor overclockability on Haswell. Not sure how Ivy-E is with OCing.

Oh really? I knew AMD had their exceptions but I wasn't 100%. I just assumed that it couldn't be done. My mistake, OP.

My 4770k stays at around 80% usage in BF4 multiplayer, 770sli and both cards are at 100% usage. 1080p, everything on ultra, im holding ~100+fps pretty good and it feels great at 144hz.

My 4670K is at stock with a 780 and it's pretty smooth as well, but I hitch a little due to having 8GB of RAM and I'm usually sitting at ~7.5GB usage and I play at 2560x144 on High/Ultra (whatever Auto gives me). I got the 4670k so that I could drop in a 5770k later.

How is that fail? 1080 is pretty much a standard entry level resolution on desktops.

Where are some good multiplayer benches comparing 4 vs 6 core performance?

I have a 6 core / 12 thread Xeon L5639 on my x58 rig. I play at 1440p with a Radeon 280x, Ultra settings with 4x msaa and I get between 45-60 FPS in multiplayer. The CPU utilization is typically around 55%. I can tell you that most of the physical cores are being used, but the HT threads are barely utilized.

Absolutely 100% wrong. 280x and 7970 crossfire just fine. Do your research before you give incorrect advise please.

1080 is best res for fast paced action games right now. There are really no good 120hz monitors above that res.
