Looking for a 42-46" lcd that supports 1080p, and I don't really want to get into Westinghouse, espeically because they're fugly. Need something very professional looking (solid black). This will be for all sorts of multi-media, so I'd like to keep it 8ms or under. Anyone know of the Samsung LN-S4695D? Specs look great and its in the price range <$3000.

All opinions or recomendations are fully appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I own it. It is excellent in hi-def and DVDs. SD picture doesn't look that great, but that is the case with all large high end HD TVs. Samsung is the king of LCD TVs.

Agreed! I prefer DLP, but my friend's 40" Samsung LCD is gorgeous.

I got the 40 inch verison of that monitor, well it's called the LE40F71B here in Ireland. And like greengoose says it is an amazing TV. I use it as a Pc monitor and atttached to an Xbox360. The Xbox360 is truely a jaw dropping sight on this TV. PC games as well are amazing. There is a game mode on it that reduces the response time to 6.5 seconds. But I never use it, you don't need it. I play mostly FPS shooters and there is no input lag with this TV.

My advice ----> Buy it!!!!! You will not be dissappointed!! :)

Reaper what part of Ireland. I grew up in Cork but now in Florida.

I have been think of getting this unit because of the 6000-1 contrast and the advertised "better details in the shadows and better, deeper black areas".

Have you found this to be the case?

I have a 24" Gateway & a 37" Westinghouse. The Westinghouse has the size but the Gateway has better detail in the shadow & black areas.

I thought this might kill two birds with one stone. Let me know.

Look forward to your reply.

Costco has the Vizio 47" 1080p for $1650 and yes the bottom speakers comes off for a solid black look. Sale ends on the 21st.

Before you purchase, best to do some research first. Plenty of information can be found at avsforum.com

Having said that, some Samsungs have problems with clouding backlight like Sony XBR's and most LCDs out there (even 1080p) have problem with overscanning except Sony's and others with 1:1 pixel mapping. I personally have a 40xbr2 and while a bit pricey, I use this for everything from SDTV/HDTV/PC/PS3/HD-DVD/BluRay.

What's the advantage, or difference between DLP, and LCD?

If I am correct: DLP tech normally means a projection type of monitor.
In other words not flat panel and therefore geared for TV / Movie / 360 & PS3 type gaming and not as a PC monitor.

Do the two Samsung models Samsung LN-S4095D 40" 1080p / Samsung LNS4096D 40" 1080p not have 1:1 Pixal Mapping?

That sony does seem pretty tempting...
Regarding DLP's, i've been reading that they give off a rainbow effect that really distracts a lot of users.
Thanks for all the inputs! I'm still researching for the "right" one.

Hi JMD, I am from Longford myself. Lucky git living in Florida, do they understand you at all over there??? LOL.

anyway, Here is my review, honest review.

Here are all the issues reported with this TV on 130 pages off the UK av forums.

There is a problem with overscan on the HDMI and component inputs. In ireland samsung is sending a firmware upgrade out to anyone who requests it to fix this. In the USA, this firmware should have been applied in the factory. It basically gives an option in the menu to turn on justscan which turns off the overscan feature on HDMI. So 1 to 1 mapping is now perfect on the HDMI input.

There is no fix for the component yet, but I use an Xbox360 to play games and I also use the Xbox's DVD player to upscale DVD's to 1080P. You really don't notice the overscan at all. It was noticable on the HDMI inputs though.

The Sound quality isn't the best. It's ok for watching soaps or that, but for watching movies and playing games it's really awful. This wasn't a concern for me, as I have it hooked into my 5.1 surround system.

Sometime when you switch from movie mode to dynamic mode or game mode the colours start flickering. It's just a simple matter to turn off and on the TV to solve this. I leave the TV in movie mode all the time, not because of that issue but because the picture is just better in that mode and was easier tweaked to exactly what I wanted.

And if you have a bad analogue signal the TV really looks crap. AS most HD TV's do.

That's all the issues, the biggest one was the overscan on the HDMI inputs, this is now fixed.

Now the Good :D

The picture quality is just fantastic. I use it as a PC monitor mainly for games and watching HD movies as well as work. I also have it connected to my xbox360 as I said already. Once you tweak it properely this TV is amazingly good. I haven't had any issues with ghosting or lagging. I have watched braveheart, the 3 matrix films, gladiator, ice age, incredibles, prison break, etc. etc. Some in HD, some on DVD. They all looked astounding.

Trust me on this, if you buy this Tv you will not be dissappointed with the picture quality.

That 6000:1 contrast ratio is a dynamic contrast ratio, it works better with dynamic contrast turned off :)

And lastly, how good are the black levels?? Well, they are very good, and to compare, I did a side by side test with my brothers 42 inch philips plasma, bought just before xmas. He is a plasma lover, LCD hater lol. But He was so impressed with this TV that he is thinking of getting one for his bedroom to use with his xbox360.

If you have any questions just post them here and I will answer them as best I can.

Cheers
Reaper.

LoL. I have to agree with you on that, I had a 22" Westinghouse and it to didn't look all that attractive. But, the features of video input and the price at the time is what made me get it. I wasn't satisfied with the picture quality enough so.. I got a 24" and sold it. But anyways...Samsungs are great. They always stand out among a majority of the other TVs with its high contrast ratio and black piano finish. The Sony KDL-46V2500 line looks good with the 7000:1 contrast ratio and the built in sound on that thing is pretty good. It was over $3,000 though I seen at CompUSA. However, the 46" Samsung monitor had good reviews on cnet.com from the editors as well as the user reviews.

Just for the sake of discussion, does this monitor have the 92% color gamut backlight? Samsung has a couple different 46 inch panels, so I'm not sure which one this tv uses. I have a 23 inch Samsung and I really like it. Yellows do seem a little muted though, probably something that I could fix in the colors.

Just as a heads up, Newegg has a good deal on the TV.

Yes it supports the 92% colour Gamut, acually it supports higher.

Yes it supports 1080p over the VGA and HDMI connections. Both connections can be used for the PC.
