45x HDD storage build?

You may want to take a look at BackBlazes open hardware platform.
It happens to be for 45 hard drives.
Since you have picked your hardware, I would at least read it for lessons learned.

The thing is though BackBlaze pods are only designed with 2 disk redundancy per pod. This is simply not enough for that many disks. BackBlaze has their own OS (that you can't get) they run on each pod as well as overall data storage architecture where there are redundant pods too. If you are just building one, losing the whole pod is not acceptable.
 
nothing stops you from setting up duplication or parity if you use their case design afaik
 
If space isn't much of a concern (you can mount them back to back as they are half-depth):

You can get 3x Rackable 16 Bay SAS/SATA JBOD enclosures for $585 with cables.

It would save you $1212.

The chassis would be daisy chained together.

For that price you could do 4 enclosures and have 2 enclosures on each channel and still end up with enough bandwidth.

Will this properly support generic SATA disks? I thought they still have trouble behind SAS extenders.

Redundant power supplies are nice but spendy.

If you can afford to save on enclosures you can opt for a 12Gbps controller or two

This was contentious more than a year ago on this forum but lately I've not seen anything. I've got a bunch of various 2TB SATA (all brands, green and not green, all consumer types) in a SE3016 and no trouble.
 
i have 2 x HP expanders and not a single problem.. have had those for a long time..
