450watt powmax psu...?

Do power supplys, after they start to age, stop giving off the top rating watts its supposed to? Like lets say you have a 400 watt..over the course of a few years does that wattage lesson to the point where its maybe giving off 350watts? I walk in my room last night and the lcds on my drives have dimmed alot and th elcd on my display is completely shut off yet windows is still running..I play some games and get massive graphic corruption after about an hour. I then reboot only for a msg saying my 9800pro wasnt plugged into the power connector, yet it is. I then unplug some stuff (my fans) to see if maybe my psu was dying to only plug it back in and have none of my hds powered, no cdroms, 1 fan and no CPU fan. I instantly turn it off (was on for about 3 seconds), check the molex connections and power it back on still nothing, no cpu fan (was on for about another 3 seconds, I HOPE TO GOD my cpu didnt die because of this). Now my once powered psu will not power anything on..how the hell does this happen if no physical damage has occurred to the psu?

btw this has happened before..I usually turn off my pc, let it cool down then power it back on and it works..just this time nothing powered back on..so im guessing dead psu
 
it's a powmax, throw it out.

I had a 400W powmax, powering my HTPC, die... I replaced it with a 145 watt compaq supply, and it's running fine now.
 
Powmax = Not even worthy of sitting in my cat's box to be pissed on. They rate them slightly past the threshold of what they can really sustain. That 450 is really only capable of 350 safely.
 
lol..so since my motherboard powered on twice for about 3-4 seconds within a 2 minute span do you think my cpu is dead cause it overheated? if it is dead..i will never buy another amd..

If it powered on for a few seconds and then turned off its probably a bad power supply. And if your CPU is dead from overheating thats not AMD's fault.

of course its not AMDS fault..but if it only takes 3-4 seconds for a cpu to die because the fan didnt turn on DUE to a dead psu than i wont buy another amd for that reason..i saw a video once awhile ago where they took 2 amds and 2 intels..a amd k6-2, and an amd thunderbird, a p3 and a p4..while running a quake3 time demo on the intels, they took off both of the cpu fans while it was running..game slowed down dramatically..but played. put the cpu fan back on and it instantly sped up and did not freeze.

they took the cpu fans off both of the amds on the time demo and blue screened both and smoke came off the cpu die. needless to say both amds were about 500+ degrees and melted..

that's because the intels integrated heat management on the die, and the AMD's didn't do that until the A64. The A64 will do what you described with the P4...

Tom's Hardware? bahahaha... that was the most retarded article they ever wrote, and I stopped reading their site after they released it. They didn't disconnect the CPU fans... they pulled the entire fucking heatsink off the chip! Last I heard, something like a failed power supply or a fan failure doesn't cause your heatsink to spontaneously go flying off your chip...

A dead CPU fan will cause the heatsink to start absorbing heat and getting warm, but the temperature will take a long time (possibly minutes with a heavy copper cooler) before the CPU hits maximum die temperature... this gives plenty of time for your motherboard's overheat protection to kick in and shut the computer off.

And even if this wasn't the case, both your CPU and CPU fan are powered off +12V. If your +12V rail dies then your CPU fan won't be running... but since your CPU won't be running either, what's the problem?
 
Bartons have thermal shutdown too i believe. They are also rated to 90c, so unless you have no HS on your CPU it should be fine. Of course, if your POS PSU sent a power spike though your system, that could ruin the CPU (and anything else).

Your CPU is most likely fine... and if it did die, it wasn't from heat.

There's the possibility that when your power supply died, it sent bad voltages down the +3.3V rail (which is used within your CPU, and all sorts of chips which connect to it) and destroyed it. But if this is true, you can blame powmax for that...
 
2 nights ago when that happened i unplugged 3 of my 80mm fans..yesterday I plugged all 3 fans in and the computer powered up for about 2 hours and worked fine..then again graphic glitches and went to reboot and again got an error saying my 9800pro wasnt plugged into the molex connection..Im guessing my psu is on its last leg..starting up then once it gets to a heavy temp load, goes beserk.

its almost like my psu isnt giving my pc enough power anymore..because it does turn on..so its not a 100% dead psu..like I can turn it on right now, all 3 hds power up, all my fans power up, mb, cpu fan..etc..cept it gives me an error saying my 9800pro isnt plugged in, and it beeps nonstop. Then like a day later i turn it on and it powers on fine..powmax i understand is the shittiest psu brand and wont ever buy them again..I was reading on some psus and saw that Ultra one that you plug your cords into according to what you need powered..is that a good one? or should I just use an antec seeing as how they seem to be one of the better ones..
 
It's the PSU's fault.

If your CPU is dead, it's not AMD's fault, there's no reason to not buy an AMD again. That PSU would do just as much damage to an Intel.

Get a good PSU.
