One of my friends who is a gamer with a REALLY tight budget asked me to help him out with choosing the parts he needs for a pc he is going to build. I asked him what his budget was and he told me 410 including shipping.
This is what I came up with

It comes out to $416.48 with shipping

Tell me what you think, anything you would change?

Thanks,

It worked for me I dont know why it didnt work for you but now I got it linked to each part so it will work for everybody

your not going to be doing any great gaming on a 6200, maybe try and find a better card used.

Its going to be really hard making a gaming pc for that much money. The bare minimum I would go would be socket 939 and pci-express...

If he could round up some more money it might be possible with like 500-600 budget but with $410 shipped you might as well try your luck at ebay or perhaps someone selling a rig on these forums where you can get really good deals!

I would strongly try to upsell your buddy by about $100. That system with only 512mb of ram and Turbo Cache 6200 eating into that even, is gonna struggle mightly. If he can't afford to upgrade by $100, ditch the video card all together and go with a 6100 intergrated solution until he can afford an add-on card.

For $465.97 before shipping at the egg (shipping is over $40 tho, maybe shop around)

AMD Sempron 2800+ $75.50
ABIT NV8 mob $69.50
XFX GeForce 6600 GT 128mb $125.00
Rosewill 1 gb (2 x 512) PC 3200 $69.49
Maxtor DM 8 40gb PATA $43.50
Antec Solution Case w/350w $62.99
DVD ROM $19.99

Thats a good entry level point, has a video card capable of providing enjoyable play, a cpu that will atleast handle its own.

Some money could be saved buying things on the forum.

my 2 cents.

Start by buying your parts from a retailer that has cheaper shipping and doesn't charge you tax.

If he wants a gaming PC, he needs a lot more money than that. A decent gaming rig is going to be $1000 minimum, he is much better off just buying a 360 or a PS2 and a bunch of games with that cash right now.

My almost 3 year old system would beat that one, and I can barely play FarCry on it.

Definetely stretch the budget for a 6600GT. My dad has a 6200 and it sucks pretty bad, it can't even play Quake 4 at medium smoothly.

If you can, also try to get 1GB of RAM.

I talked with him and told him basiclly with that budget your better off with a 360 and he agreed so now he is going to get a xbox 360 instead.

That's a bit misleading. I built a decent gaming rig for $600 a couple months ago and it runs everything I throw at it. Not everyone NEEDS to play games with anything higher than 1024x768 and 2 or 4xAA.

Agreed, i just build a rig for about $700 that gets 6000 in 3dmark05 and runs all games smoooooothly

Yea, that is a good choice, to go with a 360 on a budget like this.

uhh no i built my system for 750$, 3200+ , 1gb ram, 6800gs, wd raptor....

Yeah $400 would be tough. But under $1,000 is obtainable. For example, i just built a fairly decent gaming PC for under $700:

- Biostar SLI NF4 motherboard (~ $79)
- EVGA 7800 GT ($300)
- AMD 64 3000 Venice ($150)
- Rosewell 512MB DDR400 (~$45); paired it with another 512MB that i already had.
- Thermaltake 420W power supply ($35)
- CoolerMaster ATX Mid-tower ($60)

I didn't have to buy a hard drive or a optical drive because i already had some from my old computer. And with this board i can always add a second 7800 for sli, upgrade the processor to a AMD 64 X2, and add some SATA 2.0 hard drives (with RAID support). Along with the onboard gigabit lan. This board has a lot of upgrade potential for only $xx! But the onboard sound is not that great, unless you plan on using a digital output.
I just got done playing COD2 on this machine with all the settings maxed out and it ran very smoothly.

Maybe you can talk your friend into spending $200 more. And you could build them a solid entry level gaming machine with alot upgradability.
