Can anyone reccomend an inexpensive but *safe* PS that would work to just bolt right in to a Dell E521? The E521 has only SATA drives so the DVD R/W and HDD both need SATA cables and the drives are really far apart. Anyone know of any PS's that fit stock (had an old Linkworld 400W PS that had two SATA connections but they didn't reach both drives).

I have a 7900GS I want to put in the E521 ...

Thanks in advance.

It's not propriatory. Just checked.

Try a Corsair HX 520. It has longer cables, it's modular, and it has tons of power.

how long do they need to be? How about the xclio 400W? theres also a 500W Ultra from Fry's thats FAR:

$40 - XClio 450BL ATX 450W
$0 - Ultra V Series 500W Power Supply ($40 - $40MIR)
$0 - Ultra Wizard Blue Mid ATX Tower Case ($40 - $40MIR)

Theres also these:
$28 - HighPoint Rocket133 PCI IDE Controller Card
$30 - PROMISE ULTRA133 TX2 PCI IDE 66M PCI Controller Card

$14 - SYBA SD-SATA-IDE Serial-ATA to IDE Adapter
$15 - SABRENT SBT-SCIDE Serial ATA to IDE Ultra ATA-100/133 Mini Converter

$3 - SATA-2-Molex Adapter @ performance-pcs.com
$8 - SATA 15-Pin Power to 4-Pin Molex Adapter @ cooldrives.com

$3 - 8" SATA Power Adapter Cable
$3 - 8" Dual SATA Power Adapter Cable

You need more than a 450. If it's not proprietary, go with a SeaSonic S12 500 watt. Leave the modular cabling alone.

He'll be fine with the 450. They really don't draw a ton of juice. Plus, those requirements are made for people using shitty generics. I bet you could run one on a good branded 400, or even 350.

Why does he need more than a 450W? Doesn't the system run fine on the Dell 305W PSU without the 7900gs? Now add in the 7900GS, which needs:
evga.com said:
Minimum of a 400 Watt power supply.
(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 20 Amp Amps.)
Minimum 500 Watt for SLI mode system.
(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 28 Amp Amps.)
The 450BL can output 450W, 150W of which is drawn from the +3.3V & +5V rails, leaving 300W for the other rails (including the +12V rails). So lets say 275W for the +12V rails, meaning 23A max from the +12V rails is available. I think that fits eVGA's requirement of 20A. BTW, the system, including the 7900GS, only requires 250W, according to the extreme psu calc. So the system really only needs 19A from the +12V rail.

Also, seasonic is not inexpensive.

p.s. its late and i'm sleepy, so please pardon and correct my mistake(s). thanks.

oh, the system used in the psu calc was an am2 x2 5000+/2x sticks of ddr2/2 sata hdds/1 dvd burner/a sound card/a couple 120mm fans/and the 7900GS... so if your system has less, than you're good. if your system has more, recalculate. :p
