i might build a computer for someone i work with... if i do.. i want it to be $400 for me to build so i can sell it for $500

no OS is needed.. no monitor, keyboard, or mouse either.. he wants it beige becasue his k,v,m already are..

so i am thinking..
$40 case
$60 motherboard
$75 2500+ or M2400+
$100~ish for 512 ddr
$35 for burner
$100 hard drive
$10 floppy

all from new egg...

i made one that was an antec minuet case with a raptor and 2500+ that aws $475 or something but he said he wanted beige..

i doubt he will use too much HD that is why i think a raptor.. but he does have cable internert and high school aged daugthers... so they might wind up doing their kazaa thing on it and filling the HD...


so what would people reccomend? 400-450... he wants the cheapest comptuer that is still good.. so i am thinking i can get him that for $500
 
as usual, it depends on what he wants to do with it. If he doesn't do any gaming, a good $500 computer is pretty easy to put together. If he does a lot of gaming, it's very hard to build a $500 gaming computer.
 
no gaming, the guy is in his 50's... he has daughters in HS.. so they would probably put their instant messengers and shit on there... but i doubt they would play any games...

i am definitely thinking integrated video here.. i would say 256 ram.. but no.. 512 makes a computer run so much nicer...

in that case you could easily get away with a 1.6 duron for $40, a 80 gig HD for 70-80, theres gotta be a cheaper case...

ok.. should i put a raptor in it? will it make it run faster? or just load faster?

i am pretty sure he won't use all 512 mb or ram... so i am just wondernig if a raptor would be worth it to make him feel like "damn this thing is fast" or if a 120 gig would be better

do you think hell fill up a raptor? if he will get the 120 gig. if he wont get the raptor for the speed. hell definitly notice but you dont want him bitching that you screwed him over on space (which he WILL do, trust me)
 
and here is something i actually never thought of before..

is a 1.6 ghz duron actually 1.6 ghz?? and a 1600+ altlon something like 1.27 ghz?

that would mean that aside from a smaller cache, a 1.6 duron would run as fast at a 1600+ althlon... and have the same ghz as a 2000+

or is this just wrong of me to think?

its actually 1.6 ghz. it has the much less cache, correct. if you want to be hardcore you can mod the chip and get the rest accessed but its not guaranteed to be good ;)

I wouldn't be surprised if you could push that duron to 2.2Ghz and even more... the integarted graphics would welcome that additional bandwidth.

//edit: I believe the Durons don't get enough respect. With the AMD architecture, the cache deficit doesn't make such a big difference. In the Intel world, it makes worlds of difference. She doesn't play too many games, so that wouldn't matter so much. Plus, they overclock like a dream. 2GHz is pretty much guaranteed, making it 12x166. Yes, they're locked, but I know people who can run them at 12x200MHz no problem...

also... there will be no overclocking... i don't want to have to play technical support with this guy... i am telling him that up front... and i also don't want shit dying on him... he is upgrading from a 400 mhz something... so it will be a huge difference... and hopefully it will be faster than his dell that he uses here which is a 2.4c i think with 256 mb of ram..


if he really wants go to the hassle, i can tell him to pick up a HD at a B+M store and wait for the rebate, then bring it to me before i start building the comptuer...

also take into account that shipping will be about $30
 
all I can really say is definitely 512 Megs RAM (single stick) and a hard drive w/ 8Mb cache. . .those right there, with whatever else that you seem to be considering will definitely help the system out overall. Other than that, I'll let the conversations continue ;)

(oh, and of course dont' forget the LAN. . . try to get 10/100/1000 base network, since it's a new system)
 
i don't see how a 1000 base nic would help him...
his comcast cable modem will work full speed on a 10mb nic... and he will only have one computer in his house more than likely... (maybe he will keep his 400 mhz as a spare)

but just becasue i am curious... what boards come with a built in 1000m/b lan???
 
Well, That's mainly IF you can find one in the price range you're looking for. Mainly just for future compatibility, and can be a simple, possibly cheap high-end device that would be a nice addition to a nice system. If they do ever network locally or anything, is set to go at top speed.

But true, internet's not gonna notice that difference. .at least not as of this time. . .

I don't know what ALL boards do. . mine did. . . Intel D875PBZ.
 
I say get two sticks of memory, dual channel helps quite a bit for integrated graphics.

If you are not overclocking, then get that spreeze cooler. It should be fine.

Gigabit lan is on many boards. Just check them out.... I don't think it'll be necessary.
