I have a Silverstone ST85F Strider 850W that I bought in 2007. I'm currently running the rig in my sig. However, I'll soon be upgrading to a 2600K and a single GTX580 (haven't determined mobo yet).

According to the specs, my current PSU is plenty capable. However, it's going on 4 years old now. Is this "too old" to trust anymore? Capacitors don't last forever, and PSU's have plenty of them.

What's the consensus of the viable age range for a PSU?

No need for replace, if it will stop to work, then you will replace it, there is no direct danger posed to your new components

The consensus is that it works until it doesn't. Regardless of the age, it's a good quality PSU, and it's plenty for the upgrades you'll be making.

Run it until it fails on you. It is very unlikely an older power supply is more likely to damage your components, unless it was crap in the first place, which yours isn't.

Thanks for the replies, folks. I'll be keeping it then, and using the extra money to offset the cost of a SSD.

better to do it that way, when your old parts still work well and can be used again, why not, I saved alot of cash like that on my rigs

It depends on the brands of the capacitors. Old Antecs were famous for bloating their Fuhjyyu capacitors in 3 years, and the Antec SmartPower II series was even worse and would stop turning on after 2-3 years. OTOH I have a couple of Deltas made in 1999 that still work great, and they're full of Japanese capacitors that I sampled a few years ago and found were all in good shape.
