I'm looking for recommendations for motherboards that can realisticly support four GPUs. What I mean by realistic is a motherboard that doesn't need PCIe extenders or other work arounds. However, I am open to home rememdies that don't require a blow torch or machine tools to get the job done;) So far, I can only comfortably get three GPUs in a box. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

This all depends on the cards.... I'm assuming you are looking at top of the rung high end cards...
There are tons of single slot cards out there that you can do 4 GPU's easy. It just depends on what you are buying...
 
All my boxen have high-end double slot GPUs. Here is a list, if it helps.

1 x GTX 780 Ti
2 x GTX 780
1 x GTX 770
1 x GTX 680
3 x 660 Ti
 
3 GPU's in a box is the limitation of most CASES, not motherboard. for 4 in a standard ATX you have to have space on the bottom of the motherboard which in MOST cases you run out of room. This has nothing to do with the motherboard really since tons of 4 slots spaced properly.

Like somebody else said a real issue is usually airflow. reference coolers tend to be the only hope.
 
Thanks for the recommendation. I've avoided AMD processors because of their high TDP. I'm trying to maximize my ppd/watt. The less heat generated is less AC I have to pay for. If the solution is a larger case, then can someone recommend some cases.
 
This little guy will do it. Though, again, you're looking at EATX or larger for the board size, which limits case selection if not running naked.

This looks like the updated version of the above. My bad! And it's cheaper!

...and as mkrohn said...my limitation is the case it is going in as far as the last slot goes. The other issue is that I have a huge heat sink on it (The old Cooler Master V8 with a conversion kit) and the card in the first slot almost touches the heat sink. So very little air flow between heat sink and the back of the first card. That makes me nervous. I will probably just end up using 3 slots, but will watch temps to see if I use all 4. Even still, the cards will be pretty tight since they are dual slot cards. Again, most dual slots really need 3 slots unless the fans are designed to pull air from the case over the card and out the back. Most aren't.
 
There's also a z87-WS board from asus and another board from Gigabyte based on te z87 chipset that supports 4-way cfx and sli.
 
Musky, I know you have BA boxen in your plantation. If you have GPU rigs, how are they configured?

I bought a riser to experiment with. I realized I needed a rack to hang the cards on. I figured it was easier to go three cards to a case. Has anyone made a rack to support the GPUs above their case?
 
Spotswood is still selling his frames. They look really sharp and professional; up to six GPUs:eek: Now I need to save up some money for two or three of them. Anyone want to help me rob a bank? I'll drive the get away car:D
