So I got a Panasonic 4k TV, and I've hooked it up through Displayport, and it does 4k 4:4:4 perfect. Looks great. Used the purple picture thing and it clearly shows 4:4:4. I can read red text, all of the tests pass. However, separate from all of this and perhaps asked about in a separate thread, I have to switch to either "single stream" mode on Displayport, or switch to an HDMI port in order to get full screen 1080p. Ok. Whatever. BUT, when I do, I can make it do "1080p direct mode" which is supposed to push 4:4:4, and it.. kind of does? When I look at the purple picture I can see BOTH 4:2:2 and 4:4:4.. the red text test, and others seem.. kind of ok? Not perfect like the 4k @ 4:4:4, but not as bad as in 4:2:2 mode (which clearly only shows 4:2:2). Anybody heard of something like that?

Ok, I've kind of answered my own question, but if anybody is curious, it seems to be a down-sampling thing from the native 4k resolution. I can turn on 4x4 mode (direct 4 same color pixels) and it makes the 4:4:4 show up in the picture. But it kind of looks like garbage. Hmmm. Smoother picture, or accurate color...

Your 1080p source is 4:2:0 when it is TV or it is produced in TV-like format. The source can also be 4:4:4 if it is originating from computer. After interpolating to 4K the results for both sources will be different.
