4.1s really different from 5.1?

A couple years ago (2001) I purchased an Alienware, (Well not me really, just since it was in the early years of Alienware and things were pretty cheap) And since then, I have replaced everything with new tech, except for my Klipsch 4.1 speakers (http://www.3dsoundsurge.com/reviews/ProMedia41/ProMedia41.html) And so far it has served me really well, I love everything about it, and I'm completely sold to Klipsch for my next purchase for speakers. Now my question, is it really that much of an upgrade as for the Klipsch 5.1 ProMedia Ultras compared to the ProMedia 4.1s? In general, 5.1s are a lot much better than 4.1s?
 
Not for games. Movies, yes. The two fronts on a 4point will emulate a center, but theres no replacement for more speakers.
IMO, in the computer world, 5.1 is more a popular catch-phrase. 4.1 is all you need unless your PC is your TV ect... and if thats the case we now know why alot of geeks have no girlfriends. :D
 
I'm wondering the same thing. Currently I have a 4.1 setup (Cambridge FPS2000 Digital) but with my SB Live! 5.1 I don't really get any positional audio, sounds more like stereo even though everything is set to quadrophonic output. I was thinking of getting Logitech's Z-5300 but I'm not certain it's worth it and whether I'd notice any difference.
 
I do have positional and i'm using the SB Live!, Kinda crappy IMO, so i'm upgrading to the Audigy 2 ZS Platinum soon. And thanks for the replies. I guess I will hold off for maybe a bit till Klipsch releases some new speaker sets.
 
We're just now getting to the point where computer games are properly using a center speaker for 5.1. Traditionally for movies the center is most important since all dialogue is from the center of the screen where people are talking. Until recent games, it seemed like developers had a heck of a time keeping their audio focused to the correct speakers and making the center work like it should, but most current games seem to be getting it right.

I'd say if you are going to play a lot of games, a good 5.1 set is a must now.
