So, I recently sold my 7970 and I'm looking to get something new. I run 3x 1920x1200 Dell U2412M's. I'm not biased towards either side, I've always flip flopped between whoever has the fastest cards for the money. As far as budget goes, I'm looking at a single card, with the intent to add a 2nd soon. Right now I'm trying to decide between going 780 Classified or a 290 that can unlock. There seem to be pros and cons on both sides of the fence. The biggest for me right now is that for multi-monitor the 290's would be great, but the mining tax sort of kills the performance for money. Opinions?

Depends on your case. If you don't have a case with lots of airflow, you'll want to stick with a reference blower style cooler. The 780 has the best reference cooler in the business, so if you are going to go dual cards, 2 reference 780's would be awesome.

If you have a bigger case with good airflow that opens up a lot of different possibilities, including 2 non ref 290's (xfx dd, sapphire tri-x) which would be pretty awesome for that resolution.

I run that same monitor setup with a single 780 lightning, runs everything at acceptable settings for me, but I do plan on a second card when they come down in price, or hit the used market.

If you're going to be adding a second card in the future I would go with the GTX 780. While AMD has better muli-monitor support, nVidia supports more games with SLI profiles than AMD does with CrossFireX. Games are generally more compatible with SLI than CrossFireX, as well.

If you're going for a single-card solution, the AMD R9 290X is the best value-to-performance ratio in the enthusiast market right now... if you can grab one for close to MSRP. If you want to add another one in the future, though, I have read about several problems with these cards in CrossFire that may be fixed in future driver updates, but then you have no guarantee of a timeline on those fixes.

I went with the GTX 780 myself a month ago. I have gone mostly with Green in the past, but wanted to try the R9 290X after everything I've read about. But because I wanted to upgrade now and I couldn't find a 290X at a reasonable price, I went Green again.

I run 290x in CF at this resolution. Let me tell you - it is fucking loud. The performance is pretty nice in BF4, though. I was previously concerned because my 5870 CFX setup was garbage - never really worked well at all, horrible microstuttering, etc. Whereas my 580 SLI and 690 worked perfectly, for the most part. Experience with 290x in CFX has been pretty positive so far. I'll likely add them to my water loop to eliminate the noise issue.

If I were you, I'd really only be looking at 780 Ti SLI or 290x CFX for that resolution.

You won't be able to find a new 290 that unlocks anymore.

I can recommend CF 290s for 5760, as that is my setup.

I would think a 780ti/290x would be requirement for 1440p triple setup, but I don't see why a pair of oc'd 780's can't manage 5760x1200... The monitors are only 60hz,

Thanks for the opinions guys, after much reading and window shopping I ended up grabbing a 780 Classified at a great price. Hopefully with a mild overclock it will hold me over until I can get a good deal on a 2nd card :)
