3rd HD problem

ok heres my problem

i have 2 new sata drives 1raptor 36gb and 1 wd caviar special ed 200gb.

2 new sata drives are ntfs
old ide drive is FAT32

i am tryin to gain access to an old ide hd,(OLD HD IS STORAGE ONLY NO OS ON IT)
when i boot xp with the 3rd hd connected xp see's it but wont allocate it a drive letter, in disk management i only have option to delete partition all other options are greyed out. but it shows the drive as healthy and active


now when i was installin xp with the 3rd hd connected xp would not allow install on any of the sata drives saying the drive did not contain a winxp partition, but with the 3rd hd disconnected no problems.

when i use command prompt through the xp cd(xp restorer or something like that) it sees drives c,d,e all 3, when i DIR on my old drive everything is there.

could i use the command prompt COPY function and if i can how would i copy everything or copy individual folders?

Actually you want to use "xcopy" to move whole directories and directory structures. I back up my stuff to a second internal hard drive. It used to take a boatload of CD's or even DVD's, but I have a little batch file that I can fire off when I'm not at the PC and it takes care of the job. I figure the only way I can lose data is if I have two drives die at the same time....not likely, I think. Here's the command line I use:

xcopy "C:\whatever" "Z:\backup\C Drive\whatever" /E /H /I /R /Y

....I'm still fiddling with it a little, but it seems to copy every directory and file underneath the root (In this case - "whatever") to the target drive just fine. You'll need one of these command lines for every directory you want to back up / copy. I have them in a little batch file that runs like the bomb I suppose you could do a whole drive, If you wanted to, with this same command line.

XP has robocopy built in which can automatically transverse subdirectories..

Type Robocopy /? at the command prompt for a full list of switches.

Sorry, my mistake, its part of the XP resource kit. Its like xcopy but has more options and capabilites than xcopy.
