I paid 3K for this(above pic) Quadro system from a shop. About a year ago.

Been looking at the CoolerMaster 690 casemods post. Ill be building my first system(CoolerMaster 690) in a week or two. I know know what to do and how to.

Anyone have any words of wisdom for a noob for cable management?

What are the specs for that system. Video card certainly looks weak, but if it's a Quadro, those can be expensive. Just hope you weren't gaming on it.

I tried a game or two but its far too weak, its only good for modeling.

Q6600
4GB 4x1GB DDR2 800
2, RaptorX's
Qudro1700(aka geforce 8600) $500 and it still cost $500 and its over a year old now.
Antec Solo
Antec 650W

It handles (modeling)Maya and Photoshop just fine but video is a joke.

My new system that I will be building myself:

GTX 260
Q9550
2x2GB Gskill DDR2 1000mhz
Raptor
CoolMaster 690

So, from the pics I looked at, the cable mamagement looks pretty eazy, just may take me some time to do it right. Ill never have that shop build my stuff again. I grew up doing it all my self. Ill just start doing it all myself again.

Unless you just really have an itch to rebuild, I'd just replace the GPU. The Q6600 is still a great CPU, and depending on your motherboard, you can probably get it to 3.0-3.6GHz with a fair bit of ease.

As far as cable management goes, make everything neat and as out of the way as you can. Then you hide what you can't make neat. :p

So, just practice, take my time, think it through. Use the pics on this forum for examples. And "Oh! ya, take my time."? For the cables.

thanks,
shane c.

For $3000? You got taken.

I would definitely invest in some zipties to manage some of the cable...maybe even sleeve some of it.

wow you got ripped hard, would barely cost half of that for the parts.

as long as you know what cables go where, then unplug them all, start again, and zip tie / tuck away all of the slack cables.

I know I got the shaft on that one.

On the CoolerMaster 690, Would 36" sata cables be too long, at least for the hdd cage?

thanks,
shane c.

Most likely too long. Rule of thumb for cases, measure a straight line from motherboard connector to hdd connector and add 6-12" depending on obstacles, routing etc.

Will someone recommend a brand or a sata cable?

Need three,

RaptorX hdd sata1
DVD-RW sata1
WD Black hdd sata2

want somthing high quality, from Newegg or an reputiable online store?

thanks,
shane c.

okgear brand on newegg. I use them. But they're gonna rape you on shipping for any SATA cable. (Its like $1-2 per cable)

you can probably use the back side of that drive cage to hide most of the cables. I'm a big fan of putting my HDD's in backwards so none of the cables show, but that's not always possible and it's NEVER practicle... just looks pretty.

Building a system now I would consider going with an Intel 920 and upgrading your RAM to DDR3 and picking up a new motherboard. Otherwise I would keep the Q6600, get 4 or 8 gigs of better overclocking DDR2, the GTX 260 and then ditch that case and upgrade it to something nicer.

As for SATA cables just go to www.jab-tech.com.

get a new mainboard. that one looks like a 965 or less, and possibly even a gigabyte. get ac ryan cables if you can from performance pc. get sata 2 cables, as these are a bit stronger and have the metal clips on both ends. for a 690, 24" cables should do it no prob. you may be able to route some cables behind the mb. so lay your stuff out and plan it good befor you start screwing stuff in. use duct tape or electrical tape and zip ties.
