My friend wants to know what is the best upgrade for 3k from:
fx 8350 and 16 gb of gtx 660

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc GAMING
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included? 3,000 OUT THE DOOR
3) Which country do you live in? If the U.S, please tell us the state and city if possible. US, not sure the gamer's city and state.
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need. CPU, RAM, CASE, Hard drives, Motherboard, etc, only thing not needed is monitors (2), keyboard, mouse, and other accessories. So basically everything within the tower itself.
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model. No
6) Will you be over clocking? Probably not.
7) What is the max resolution of your monitor? What size is it? Not sure. I know he has two screens. Likely the normal 1080p resolutions.
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC? asap
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video (as a backup or main GPU)? UEFI? etc. All features, SLI/ Crossfire support, no onboard video, USB 3.0, etc. Basically, high end ATX motherboards preferred.
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit? 64bit. Yes he already has OS.

He wants to spend 3,000. He has two screens. thanks.

3 months is far away, prices change and new products could drop.

What resolution are the screens, what will he use the system for.

Answer the sticky

Revisit this thread a week or two before you're ready to order. Anything we recommend now may be obsolete, overpriced, or out of stock by that time.

Additionally, please answer the sticky questions and list out the parts (include the brand, model, and age) in your friend's current build. There may be a part or two we can carry over into the new build, and the answers you give us help us to better tailor our recommendations to your friend's specific needs.

3) Which country do you live in? If the U.S, please tell us the state and city if possible. US, not sure the gamer's city and state.
Wait, how do you not know where your friend lives? Please find out city and state your friend lives in. That'll help us determine whether or not he lives within a 35 to 40 minute drive to Microcenter and therefore have access to Microcenter deals.

A lot of things can fit inside the tower, man:
  • sound card
  • Intel NIC
  • Wifi card
  • bluetooth adapter
  • hardware RAID controller
  • firewire card
  • internal USB hub
  • card reader
  • fan controller
  • case lighting
  • LED fans
  • sound dampening
  • operating system
  • hot-swap bay
  • etc

;)
7) What is the max resolution of your monitor? What size is it? Not sure. I know he has two screens. Likely the normal 1080p resolutions.
Please double check with him about what monitors he has. Also, please ask if he wants to play games using all three monitors or if he just plans on playing on one monitor. Finally, ask him what games he's planning on playing on this new PC.

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC? asap9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video (as a backup or main GPU)? UEFI? etc. All features, SLI/ Crossfire support, no onboard video, USB 3.0, etc. Basically, high end ATX motherboards preferred.
So far, based on preliminary information, not seeing why he needs a high-end motherboard since he's not overclocking nor does he have a large enough monitor resolution that'll justify SLI or Crossfire.
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit? 64bit. Yes he already has OS.
Read and answer the question again please.

Out of curiosity, what's happening to his current PC with that FX CPU, 16GB of RAM, and that GTX 660? I ask because unless that PC is dead, going to be given away, or already sold, not seeing why he needs a new PC. Yes there are faster gaming CPUs out there but if you already have the FX 8350 and aren't playing some really CPU heavy games so much, it'll do the job.

I figured y'all would say that. Updated.

Then why don't you help us out? I know many people who would kill to have the system your friend currently has.

And give us some specific answers to the sticky questions. You don't need to spend $3000 on a good gaming machine and you can reuse some of the parts you currently have on hand.
