Call me a 3d noob but ... not sure if this is display related or GPU so I posted here as a start.

If I want to play 3d games on a Television using AMD 3D on my 6990 do I actually need a 3d tv or can I just use passive glasses and the GPU does all the 3d rendering and splitting etc...

I am thinking of getting a 120hz LCD 46" for my office to game on using DP-HDMI connector for single screen games. A 3D LED LCD is just out of my price range and willingness to pay for an office TV. I have a panny VT25 50" in my main room for real 3d movies etc....

Also is Vizio a good brand? I was looking at walmart and they sell a 46" Passive 3d model for around 590. Thanks! - wasnt looking at it too hard but it crossed my mind.

The price difference (active vs. passive) is no longer as high as it used to be - Samsung *or* LG *active* LED-LCD (in 40" no less) are roughly $1000USD (retail today at Best Buy); I'm looking at one to replace my (slowly croaking) 42" six year old plasma in my bedroom (surprisingly I didn't, and still don't, have 3D as a must-have feature, even for a bedroom TV that can double as a monitor; however, given that AMD's midrange HD6000 series supports HD3D out of the box (with supported displays) via either DP or HDMI 1.4a, given the declining price difference, the question is "why NOT active").

I gave that as an example - also, remember, this is a 40" panel that is replacing a plasma that originally cost twice that.

Samsung has several 3D-ready monitors (half at that ~$600 price, the others half that); the larger are 27", while the smaller are 23".

The reason I am looking at 40" is because it will replace a 42" panel.
 
Keep in mind passive 3d has half the vertical resolution as active 3d for that vizio. Basically it's interlaced. So you will notice some lines, flickering, and more jagged edges. My parents got the Vizio TV in question (not for 3d, just happened to have it) and I want to try HD3D out some time. I guess it's great if you want 3d on a budget, but active 3d certainly has a quality advantage. You may want to take a look at some plasma 3d displays as I hear they have the best balance of price vs quality.

Yeah worried about burn a little on the lesser priced models since I will be using it hooked to my 4th DP port on my 6990. Using DP to HDMI converter.

Its not my main desktop. But I wanted a TV/BIG Screen for single screen games when not in eyefnity on my sig monitors.

The 3D support isn't critical; however, the NI 120 Hz (at minimum) 1080p support is, especially since it will at times double as a PC display (albeit a three-foot-plus diagonal PC display). That is also why the extra HDMI inputs are a must - HDMI-out is standard on any PC I build these days (other than certain Gigabye models, HDMI-out is also standard fare with Z68, in addition to being a checkbox item with GPUs - even at the low end).

Another rather surprising detail about HD3D at the GPU end from AMD - it's not just at the high-end (or even the high-end/midrange) of AMD's GPU line - it's in *every* HD5xxx and HD6xxx GPU from AMD - desktop, mobile, or integrated (such as 9xxFX). The low-end/mobile support was a definite shocker - the fact that, according to AMD's own documentation, that said support even extended down to FrankenGPUs such as HD5450 was an even bigger shocker.
 
The thing about high end plasma displays is their ability to recreate black/dark scenes is second to none when compared to LCDs/LEDs. It's just a difference in the technology when it comes to the backlight. Its panasonic so you know its a good plasma panel.

I just hate breaking in plasmas. Took a few weeks for my VT25 to break in.

It's fully active 3d and it does look good on my 50". This TV is $100 more than the Insignia 46" I was looking at as well which is LED LCD.

I dont know if it's wise though to hook a plasma up to a PC due to burn in potential.

JasonPC - True on the black levels and the colors on plasma are bar none the best @ 8.0+ billion color capable. The main difference is that Plasma's have no backlight at all. They are plasma gas on or off in each pixel.

You know what ....

HD3D doesnt even work on 6990. But I guess I can accept that for now since 7990 is right around the corner and it probably does.
 
Ok I'll jump in here since I have been down this road and am now playign games in 3D.

First the 6990 will not work in frame sequential or quadbuffer 3D at the moment. HOWEVER Crossfire support has just been added (I am using two 6970s) with preview 12.1 drivers. I can not comment on the 6990 and side by side however as I have not seen anythign about it.

Second you have to use iz3d or the preffered program TriDef Igntion. Both will cost you money UNLESS you buy a display that comes with it which most 3DTVs will not. The Samsung S23A750D and similar models do come with this software. As an AMD owner you will get 50% off though on TriDef. Yeah they are kinda shady about this as I am a firm believer that if you support sometihng you should include it free.

Third Running to a 3D HDTV using HDMI you will only be able to play at 1280x720 60p, 1920x1080 24p or 1920x1080 30p (30p was just added with the 12.1 drivers). What this means is you will feel the games are not as smooth at 1920x1080 ue to the lowered refresh. With the right display (such as the one I am using) you can get 120Hz... but no current gen 3D HDTVs will take a 120Hz input.

Fourth keep in mind any framerates you are getting now will go down dramatically by using either solution. TriDef is known to not take full advantage of multiple CPU cores and is not optimized very well. Here are some recent benchmarks I did just to see how it was to give you an idea. Some games arent so bad, some are worse, some are barely playable.

This is on a i7 2600k @ 4.5GHz, 16GB mem, MSI P67A-GD65, Samsung s23a750d @ 1920x1080 120Hz, Crossfire MSI ref 6970s 12.1 drivers, Win 7 x64, 2x Corsair Force 3 120GB in Raid 0 for OS and basic apps, 2x seagate 7200 RPM 1TB in RAID 0 for game and bigger programs.

I am still running through some games to get some numbers but the process has been slow.

Part of the reason I bring up side by side and frame sequential earlier.... Side by side you are basically rendering the left eye and the right eye on the same 1920x1080 space if you do it, esentially halfing the horizontal resolution. Basically it looks pixelated in 3D and not as crisp. Frame sequential you are alternating betweeen full 1920x1080 images for the left and right eye so there is no reduciton in quality.

Ghosting... This is a by product of 3D and as far as I know there is no known fix. I may not be reffering to it right but basically you see the ghost of an object on screen. you can do things like adjusting the 3D depth and near focus and etc... but you will never get it perfect. This can be distracting to many people and I am one who is a stickler for image quality... but I have to say after a while I kinda get used to it. But I do have to say most everything I have played so far has been sooooo much better in 3D, I was worried when I ditched my Eyefinity setup I would be upset... but honestly I wanted immersion and I got it big time. I really do LOVE 3D over eyefinity. Also most every game I have played has been fully playable and doesnt feel too laggy or low FPS with the exception of Dungeon defenders lol. I went back and started playing Half-Life 2 again and my son laugs at me cause I am more jumpy now when playign it... I cant help it when someting suprises me or comes at me from around a corner it is litterally right there in your face lmao. My brain is fooled more and I enjoy it honestly.

OH! Also forgot to mention... some of the lower end 3D TVs if I remember correctly are passive and use polarizing glasses, from what I remember when researching they all do a line interleved 3D, every other line of pixels is polarized for the glasses. Honestly I tried this route first before I dove in to 3D with a CRT and a set of eDimensional Glasses There was no denying it was 3D but the experience was MEH at best. I loved the 120Hz on the CRTs but hated the size of them...so I decided to gun it and buy my current monitor and I have to say going from interleved to frame sequential made the 3D experence go from MEH to MWAHAHAHAHAHA! It was litterally a night and day difference and the 3D was soooo much more pronounced and effective.
 
I have xfire 6950's and a 50" LG 3D plasma with active glasses. What do I need to make my pc games 3D on the 3DTV?

You NEED TriDef or iz3D to tell the cards to output in the method of 3D you need. Install TriDef, add the games you have and associated profiles, double click the game in TriDef to launch.
 
I once saw a review of 3d software with the iz3d driver performing much better than the tridef driver. This was a long time ago and things may have changed since then.
 
unless I format though I dont think I can use the trial of iz3d :( as I had it on here a while back when I was testing out a CRT with edimensional glasses
