How can I do an effect like WhosWe Studios ?

I want a white background, and I want some text, with a shadow casting onto the white background, but I want it to look similar to the above...Anyone have any idea how it's done?

Well it hard to explain this type of thing in a post but I'll try.

In 3d max, to acheive the shadow/reflection in the "endless" enviorment, you have to use the shadow/matte map in your material editor. Make a plane in you scene, this will be the ground that will only cast shadows and relfections. Make it pretty large so that all the shadows hit the plane from whatever the objects you are gonna put in the scene. Open your material editior. From there your gonna create a shadow matte material to put on the plane. Click the button that says "standard" and pick Matte/Shadow. You'll see there will be a few options when you pick the m/s map. If you want refelction on the ground, you'll want to put a raytrace under the "reflections" option in the matte/shadow roll out. Also if you wan't the fall off effect on the reflection, you'll have to adjust the raytrace fall off to achieve that. Now after you set it up apply it to your plane that will be your ground. Open your enviorment window and change the enviorment color from the default black to white. And there you go you have that same effect as seen on that site.

But as for the other things, thats just good modeling and animation.

Good Luck!!

Alright, tried it, and it just didn't work.

I just got a sphere, with white everywhere, no shadows, no reflection.

You need a light with shadows turned on. I say omni, or target spot with area shadows.

Oh and when you put the reflection map in the matte/shadow, you need to turn off additive reflection, it will look better that way.

if you have any other questions in 3d Max, don't be affraid to ask. :D

It's me again. :D

I'm wondering how I'd go about intensifying the reflection on the plane? I've been fiddling with it for 3 hours now, and I can't seem to get it how I want. It's very hard to see, as if it was really opaque.

in the spot whrere you put the raytrace material, in the matte/shadow, it has a multplyer that you can turn up or down, it should be right next to the slot whrere the raytrace goes.

This is with the 'amount' at 100. I *must* be doing something wrong.

I can take a screenshot of the map editor if you need.

would you mind letting me take a look at the .max file?

You could Email it to me.

Im having a hardtime figureing this out, im gonna ask around for you though, see if anyone can help out.

Alright dude, this one's been picking at me for a while now and alas I came up with a solution. So simple and it was starring me right in the face and I didn't even know it.

Heres what you wanna do.

1st scrap you matte/shadow material

start a new material, keep it a standard material. in the blinn basic parameters roll out, change the Ambient and Duffuse colors to 100% Black. Then change your Specular color to 100% White. Specular Level should be 0 and Glossiness should also be 0. Then go to you Maps Roll out, and click the check box for Reflection. Then in the map slot for reflection (where it should say NONE now) put a Raytrace in there, tweak the raytrace properites how ever you like. Now go to the SuperSampling roll out and turn on Enable Sampler Max 2.5 StarField.

In your scene make sure the enviorment map color is 100% white, and apply that new material to your plane. Make sure you have alight in there with shadows on, and that should work.

Let me know how it turns out.
