well recently i did a little upgrade to my system and did a 3dmark check.. and got a little disappointed, so im here to try to see if theres something very fishy going on here or if my system really performs as it should

before:

Micro-Star MS-6513 (i845D chipset) motherboard
P4 2.0A (northwood)
512 mb PC2700 Crucial memory
Geforce 4 MX460 64mb (Medion brand)

3DMark2001SE score: 5541

Micro-Star MS-6513 (i845D chipset) motherboard
P4 2.0A (northwood)
1024 mb PC2700 Crucial memory
Leadtek GeForce 6600 GT TDH 128mb

3DMark2001SE score: 8465

Reason i use 3dmark2001 is thats all i tried with my old system.

I was expecting to score at minimum 10k'ish :S shouldnt i be able to get something like that? Or is my mobo and cpu really that bad?

If I were to upgrade to score better what would you do? I was thinking about a new mobo, but should i rather wait till i can upgrade both cpu and mobo instead of getting a new socket 478 mobo now?

pls help ;)

3dmark01 is used because it's more reflective of the CPU power than 05. If your original graphics card wasn't so old the score would have moved much less since the rest of the system is still the same.

And if you're looking for gaming performance for cheapish, MSI nF3 Neo2 + A64 Venice 3200 + 2x512MB Crucial Value RAM.

its true, my score in 3dmark01 only went up 3 thousand points to 13000 when switching from Ti4200 to 6600GT. that benchmark is very CPU dependant, 3dmark03 and 3dmark05 are much better for testing video card performance.

venice is the one with 512kb cache aye?

cos the 1mb cache dudes are way too expensice =)

Yah, basically.

San Diego 3700+ has the extra cache, but runs 340ish or something around there.

Venice is the same thing without the extra cache (which you may or may not even see significant results from anyway). 3200+ is probably the best bet for a reasonably easy overclock if you don't want to bounce for a San Diego, and it's around 200 instead.

Venice 3200+ it is! + some mobo i havent decided yet..

any other ideas on mobo? (good performance.. stability.. oc'ing and then again not too expensive ;)

btw know that the prices here in denmark are way different, the venice 3200 is at ~220$ cheapest while cheapest san diego is at ~500$ !!!!

(i understand san diego = 1mb cache(?))

Keeping your current AGP video card? Was saying MSI nF3 Neo2, but I'm losing my patience with that one and Epox has an nF3 offering that's looking promising.

Lastest word is that DFI's Socket 939 + AGP motherboard may be here in June/July if you want to wait that long.

If you're going with PCI-E for the graphics card, then the DFI UT nF4 Ultra-D is THE best motherboard. There's some good ones for closer to 80ish too if you're on a tight budget.

Talk about price gouging. San Diego 3700+ should be about 320 USD. About right for the Venice though unless you're using one of those odd foriegn types of dollars. Run into that all the time with people in Canada. They say dollar, I say dollar, we don't mean the same thing, it's confusing all around. People need to all pick different names for the things. Then again there's that whole freaky Euro thing. Not that I keep up on foriegn politics any more than I do local politics, much less finances. It's all way too depressing.

hehe i mean us dollars.. and yes these prices are true! really..

anyways what do you guys think of Gigabyte GA-K8NS Ultra-939? (nforce 3) cause it gets good reviews and remember not all your fancy american brands are available over here :/ so im going to go with something from asus/gigabyte/abit/MSI etc. the biggies

And yes im definitely keeping my 6600 GT as well as the RAM

You're running a sempron... He's running a 2.0A P4.

HUGE difference there.

As everyone else has noted, go for an A64 and you'll see much better results.

I CAN read.
I was just stating that because of his low score, might encourage him for a cheap upgrade.

i appreciate it :) tho next time remember to add "check my profile for setup" so i can get a clue :)

Gigabyte is generally a bad idea...got anything by Epox, MSI, Foxconn, something like that? AGP + 939 is going to be an nForce3 (well there are other chipsets that do it too but they're by VIA and such, nForce3 is the good one).

Been wondering the performance difference between a 2.0a and my old celeronD 2.4 and radeon 7500 in 3dmark01 almost equal.

please explain why gigabyte is a bad idea, cause i just placed my order last night :> ;)

unfortunately no other "quality" brands than msi and gigabyte had a board with nforce3/agp/939 available over here atm. so i had it narrowed down to only the neo2 platinum and this gigabyte.

reason i doubt the MSI board is because i read this review + some user feedback where they would say it had some odd layout and a really crappy chipset fan and well i was not that impressed with what ppl had to say about it. Although I would prefer MSI over gigabyte firsthand i just didnt like it's overall feedback

My impression last night was that gigabyte was the safer bet cause generally more ppl liked it how it would just have good performance and run everything out of the box, it seemed like a lot more ppl was impressed with this board over the MSI.

Because I've never met a Gigabyte product that wasn't unstable as all hell. I have brands I prefer not to use, and ones I have a bit of a grudge against. Gigabyte is just a bunch of crap that they've done a decent job of making LOOK like a good board. Maybe you'll get lucky, and depending on what you expect of it you might be satisfied. I expect systems to be completely stable, and Gigabyte has never even approached that.

The MSI board does have it's own problems though. Epox is sounding nicer and nicer. And DFI is doing a good job of surpassing their previous accomplishments instead of just building a reputation and then making money off of that instead of off of continuing quality like happens all too often.

when you say unstable is it when you oc?
and is unstable like it crashes system often or what?
what mobos did you have..?

Used to work at a place fixing computers among other things, so a fair variety of different ones. Several of the office's systems had Gigabyte motherboards and they were always doing weird shit. Can't say as they were the best built systems around but I had no end of spare parts to swap around and when you replace everything but the motherboard on a fresh install and it STILL won't stop acting up, it gets kinda obvious. More recently I've got a friend with a 8VT800 or something like that. Stupid thing keeps crashing for no apparent reason and half the onboard devices don't work quite right. Fortunately that mobo got replaced and migrated to spare parts so hopefully I won't have to deal with it again soon.

That aside, they're usually not that hard to avoid from a shopping standpoint anyway. There are too many competing brands with better prices or features to have to put up with crap with a bad reputation. Even if it turned out not all their stuff was equally schitzo I'd still just avoid it all to be on the safe side.

though for me it isnt so. As I said before i have 2 choices for nforce3; msi / gigabyte

and the gigabyte board just seems like a good product take a look here legion hardware
one of the affiliates is even Hard|OCP :D
