Ive never used any of these things before, but know its a test of my computer, how fast it is, etc.

Just downloaded the 3DMark06 and ran it.

My score is 6277. Everything in my sig is what was used, except I have a new 8800gts instead of the 7900gt.

I dont overclock and I run this computer at 1280x1024.

What does this score mean TO ME? I dont understand what it implies.

In reality 3D Mark 06 is virtually useless as a means of determining levels of system performance relative to one another. The program can be cheated very easily and products that don't perform as well in games in real life perform very well in 3D Mark. ATI cards for example are generally slower than NVIDIA cards at present but ATI cards always outscore their NVIDIA counterparts in 3D Mark. Additionally processor performance isn't all that important to gaming performance past a certain point. Yet in 3D Mark CPU clock speed is one of the largest determining factors behind your final score.

So truthfully it doesn't mean shit. You could score higher in 3D Mark 06 because of your video card, but your processor is relatively weak and that's why your score is a little bit low for a 8800GT.

So, I should just delete this Mark06 then ehh? Sucker was 588mb. I'll be glad to get it off my computers HD. Total wasted space.

Although I do not OC. I cant help but to be curious about my computers performance. What it does and what it IS capable of doing.

Is there a FREE program I can use that will tell me those things without being biased?

It has its' uses, but they are few. It can be useful for stability testing and verifying changes you've made to your system in that 3D Mark will tell you if what you have done made a difference or not.

As far as benchmarking your system goes there is no one thing to use. Processor and memory performance can be tested by a number of different programs. Super Pi, wPrime, Sandra 2007, and so on. 3D Mark is one of the few that benchmarks graphics, but again its' too easy to cheat to be taken seriously.

Any one of these benchmarks will give you various theoretical figures, but theoretical is all they are; unless your computer is actually used for calculating digits of pi, SuperPi doesn't have any direct real-world relevance. Sure, something that scores higher in a benchmark may well be faster at the tasks you're doing, but the only way to really see if it makes a difference is to find what frames per second you're getting in the games you play, how long it takes to start the programs you use etc.

I would say the best use for 3DMark will help you decide if something you changes, or something you OC'd had any effect.

My score when I first built my computer was around 12,000. When I did an OC on the cpu it kicked up to 14,500. Not that, that means anything realative to everyone else's computers, but it helped me realize that my OC did me some good.

yeah 3d mark is best used for your own comparison not comparing with others. It's nice to have and use when over clocking or changing hardware it lets you know that a difference is made even if you don't notice it.

Synthetic benchmarks are always great at seeing how certain settings or overclocking effects particular things. I know when I overclocked my memory from 800mhz to 1000mhz, I saw a jump in Everest, 3dmark, Sandra but in reality, it really didn't make that much of a difference that I could actually notice it during gameplay. This pretty much set my sights on having a high fsb with a 1:1 ratio on the ram in order to get the best performance. Although the score means pretty much nothing if your games run great. Its more of an ePeen thing.

Thanks for all the replies [H].

I still dont know or understand what MY score means, but I gather, from ya'lls comments, it means nothing to ME, but used as a comparison to a group of others who have used the Mark06...to which, I can honestly care less, heh. Im not trying to be rude to others, but to me, what others scored with their computers means nothing to me, and so, my score also means nothing to me. Does that about sum it up?

So basically, for me to get any use out of Mark06, I would use it as a tool to tell me if any tweaking I did/done actually did anything for better or worse? Is that correct?

Thanks for the input [H], I do appreciate your time.

Yep use it as a gauge to see if something you changed or added to your system was any benefit. If you don't plan on tweaking your system and your games/programs run well then it's a waste of space.
