Ok, let me start out by listing my specs:

380w Antec Sonata PS
Abit Guru Mobo
AMD 64 3000+ ( O/C to 2.25ghz )
1GB Corsair XMS
MSI Nvidia 6800GT AGP

soooo.... My friend calls and tells me that I should check if my video card is getting direct power from the PS instead of branching onto 5 other fans etc... ( because I've been noticing my card running slower than it should be )

So I open my case and check, and bam, there was a fan connected to all these other retarded devices which was connected to my Video card..

So I take one of the unused string of plugs and plug it straight into my video card, and reroute everything else to a different string.

I fire up my system to make sure everything runs ( fans, etc ) and then I ran 3dmark03 to see if it made a difference.... here are the results:

BEFORE: 11502

AFTER: 9093

YES!!!!!!!

uhhhh... wtf. can anyone explain to me why this would happen... I mean, it's getting more power now... and yet, it's underperforming more than before.

Oh and my card is reading at 55 C after the benchmarks...
 
Video cards cool down rapidly, looking at the temp after running benchmarks never tells you your load temp, not even close.

Get Rivatuner and record your temps while you run some benchmarks, then tell us what you get.

Also, is it effecting game performance?

Well I was going to play some BF2 and see if it ran smoother than before...

but I'm kinda down about the -2000 ...

also, just looked at temp, it's still @ 55C....

I'll go play some BF2 real quick see how it feels.

Thats one of the most fucked up shit I've heard today. Make sure the power molex is plugged to the card directly from the PSU, don't connect the fans. Try comparing that.
 
BF2 seems to be running at the same speed ( maybe it just feels faster cause I'm mentally making it up )

But yea, the Video card has it's own string of plugs dedicated.

The fans are on a seperate string of plugs, and so are the HDD and the CD-Rom drives.

I'm really thinking about just getting a 480w PS from Enermax or Antec, because I've read somewhere that the 6800GT's require at least 480w ?

( correct me if I'm wrong )

so maybe i'll do that first, and if all else fails, I'll reformat.

( I had an ATI card before the nVidia, so I think there may still be conflicts.... I already did the drive cleaner thing, but something tells me ATI is still causing trouble in my system )

Dude I noticed the EXACT same thing, and it was right after I installed BF2. My guess is its the new 77.72 forceware drivers, as I have an nvidia card as well. I've noticed no difference in performance in BF2 either, just my 3dmark scores dropped :confused:
 
Running my 6800 on a 340watt Chieftec ps,no probs at all.

I never understood the need for a seperate connector for the Videocard, as a matter of fact Sapphire put in their manual, for my last Videocard(9800pro) that i SHOULD branch it with the primary HD, of which i think it consumes more power then 1 or 2 fans

Also,in most PSU's out on the market today, all those seperate cables connect to the same point insidethe PSU, so that everything gets the same amount of power.
(There are getting PSU's on the market that have 2 seperate 12v lines (1 for 1 or 2 videocards, the other for the rest of the system)

It might be the 77.72 drivers...

but when I benchmarked the 11k score I was running the BETA 77.72 drivers that came with teh BF2 demo...

makes no sense... ugh.

BF2 came with the 77.50s. Anyway, what the hell does it matter? As long as your games run fine you should be happy. 3Dmark doesnt matter at all, you cant even "play" it.
 
I guess that means you drop a rank in the 3DMark army. Which means....nothing.
 
Maybe your PSU is starting to lag on some power there to your video card. Also, maybe the molex connector you are using isn't getting much power. trying unplugging maybe couple of your fans, leave one or two running if you have more than that. Try different molex connectors and see if anything is different.
What about video card drivers? (I'm sure you have the latest though.)
or maybe that 380W Antec is just not enough power?

yea i think it's the power supply. I will be ordering a new one shortly.

Yeah, things like that happened to me. It took sometimes to realised I had AF on. Check all those settings - AA, AF, Vsync, Quality, and etc.
