3DMark 2005 released!

The Batman said:
It's also good for testing your OC. But yes, outside of that it is rather useless. I find it funny how ATI was bitching about benchmarks in their leaked slides yet they released a beta patch [which breaks KOTOR] for 3dmark05.

fudmaster, it fixed a longstanding issue with kotor and the patch brought noticeable performance increases to other games too. Why dont you go gripe at nvidia for releasing a driver that actually did break games to increase 3dmark05 scores.

why not do it with a game then?

I game, but not competitively.....and I would guess that I'm already fairly well known around here as a benchmark whore.....its just what I do. I don't swear by my scores as representative of gameplay performance, I just love striving for more. Call me weird, but I get more fun out of overclocking a bit and messing with 3DMark and Aquamark3 all day then I do out of sitting down to Unreal2k4 or Doom3 for a few hours.

Yup, its just a benchmark... Its always better to play the actual games and extrapolate scores from that, but 3dmark does make it easy to just get a single number.

Sort of like the old days, sure you could run a suite of windows applications and time it, but a lot of geeks still preferred the good old fashioned Mips/Mflops numbers for a quick idea of performance.

I'd even say 3dmark is not very accurate for games as many developers will make a fallback for DX7 and 8 hardware at lower visual quality, and many cards like the GF4Ti are actually quite at home not touching DX9 or advanced OGL2 at all.

I'm still downloading here, the mirrors are getting hammered.

BitTorrent has been the best for me....I did have one or two dl's going at 70kb/s or higher....but they timed out at 170MB.

The torrent has been going hard, and even though its only at 30-40kb/s....its still a hell of a lot steadier....I'll have it before I have to leave for work so I'm happy. :)

here's a teaser for you guys tryin to download it ;)

I <3 that gun

You're right, I beg your forgiveness Gordylocks. This patch FIXES KOTOR...a whole fucking year after it was released. Victory for teh ATI.

Yeah baby, now that's what I'm talkin' about. :D

What kinda fps are you hitting at THAT spot? I see the majority of scores in the mid teens for FPS....and I was wondering how it is for you guys getting about 5k.....is it ALWAYS slow.....or does it just dip really low once or twice to bring down the average?

Nice edit. I was going to rip you seven ways to Saturday on nVidia's ForceWare vs. ATi's Catalysts.

That shot, I belive I would chill around 13 fps(one of the less stressful shots imo)

Majority of the demo involves long distance shots, or shots of that gun raining hell, which makes me dip as low as 4 fps at 1024x768(demo mode runs at 800x600)

EDIT: I have a few glory shots that are the high points of the demo, but I dont want to spoil the looks on your faces ;)

Haha.....it's all good, I'll see it soon enough.....should be done downloading in 1-2 hours, as long as the torrent doesn't crap out on me. ;)

Ok, just got it, what a piece of crap, i started pushing the "Demo" button, ran for a while then crashed my PC, prolly because of my 5.1 sound setup, no 3dmark likes that, then rebooting and started the actual bench, sure firefly and canyon looked pretty but im unstalling this again, i wont even run it a second time.

And i wont even bother to read about nor download 3dmark07

kthxbye

I tried the 66.70's last night...Far Cry ran worse. Doom3 about the same. I won't reinstall them for some crap 3D demo...the 65.76's are doing a great job for me...in ACTUAL GAMES. :D

i got it from fileshack @ 99KB/s
when i first started waiting in line, the average wait time was 21 mins, when I finally started, 33 minutes later, the average wait time was ~42 minutes. heh.

i got 2023 3DMarks, and 3589 CPU Score w/my setup. 9800 @ Pro (stock) barton @ 11.5x200, 2x512MB 2-3-3-11 RAM

Just use the mirrors at the bottom, I got one working at 500k/s

ftp://ftp.edome.net/mirror/futuremark (Take a minute to come up though)

Scored 3960 with my setup:
3200+ xp
asus a7n8x-x
asus v9999ge (256mb 6800nu @410/1.12)

Hahah, the fact that your 5200 can even finish the demo speaks volumes!
:p

Yeah, I think we need to have someone come forward with the lowest possible 3DMark05 score, as in an old 1GHz Duron or something with an FX5200 with AA and AF cranked.....and about 30 apps running in the background....i REALLY wanna see a score under 100 at least. :p

Steve, any idea on what's causing the inflated scores for the hotfix? And is it legit? Does it effect anything besides 3dmark05?

wait weren't all these drivers supposed to be FM approved? Just noticed that none of the leaked or hot fix dirvers are approved by FM

EXACT same system and settings:
I guess the 4mhz boost in cpu mhz combined with the 6mhz boost in video ram speed really adds up :D I need to try the hot-fix drivers, a 1396 point increase should give me 1/3 more fps in games! (j/k)

well, indeed it did make my system cry....can't wait until some games look like the Return to Proxy Con....holy snikeys......it took my GT out behind the wood shed.....I got around 20fps.....

final score 3996

P4 3.0C with 6800GT all stock.

Anyone have a 9800xt to test this out ?

2,813

brought my 9800xt to it's knees, time to buy a new video card.

specs are below.

using latest release (non-beta) drivers.

Did the hot fix increase anything for you?

wow..... runs like complete garbage, got 2,153.

such a completely useless benchmark.

Well what in the hell did you expect dude? I mean really.....take it easy. It's not a completely useless benchmark, just cus your 9800 can't keep up doesn't make the benchmark shit...and the same goes for your video card there. I don't mind when ppl pay no attention whatsoever to sythetic benchmarks because they don't "believe" in them.....but to outright say that its completely useless just cus you score quite low is kinda silly.

I agree that the usefullness for (any) 3DMark nowadays is quite limited, but it is still there.....and I hope you'll be a little more open minded in the future.

nope.....cool benchmark though.

However,

My rig runs CS: source beta at 78 fps avg. with 2x AA and 16x AF @1024x768

I highly suggest everyone try our different drivers and then post screenshots of their results. Kinda drives the point home that any benchmark that can be manipulated by drivers should be taken with a grain of salt.

Real world in-game testing is the only way to go and the reason we do our benchmarks the way we do.

Stuff like 3DMark is fun to mess with (if its free) just for "the hell of it"...But you shouldn't buy a video card based on any single synthetic benchmark or review. I believe Kyle said it best:
