3dmark 03 so low!

My system (see sig) scored 4869 3d marks. I have a mobile AXP, running @ 2.2GHz, 1.62v stable in prime.

For some reason, 3dmark 03 has trouble identifying the correct CPU speed. For example it will show unknown CPU Type @ 2068MHz, next time I run it, it will detect 1900MHz, 1876MHz etc WTF?? How come it doesn't detect it as 2200MHz

I use ATi Radeon 9800 PRO 128mb with Cat 4.6 drivers. Windows XP Home SP1

Try pointing a nice big fan that moves alot of air at the GPU cooler.

nForce2 motherboards have been known to have unsteady clock speeds. It is a chipset issue at this point.

get the newest drivers for everything:

MoBo
Vid card
Sound (if applicable)

Run a defrag

Run spybot, adaware and a virus scan http://housecall.trendmicro.com

shut off everything else while you are benchmarking

03 is entirely vid card based. You can see my setup in my sig and I scored 5584 in 03 and 16048 in 01.

It does sound like you have some system instability if 3dmark is having problems identifying your proc speed. OR, the throttling is kicking in because it is too hot. What are your temps?

Did you move all the sliders to the performance under the graphics settings? I built a friend a machine with a mobile 2500 barton (overclocked to 2300mhz) with the DFI Infinity nForce 2 board and 9800 Pro, he scores around 6,000 (same as me). I think due to the way mobile chips work Windows will report them at difference speeds depending on the load, it's a power saving feature or something? Do you have the latest Athlon driver from the WindowsUpdate site? Try a program like WCPUID to find out your realtime clockspeed. Check it when the CPU is idle and when you load up another app, e.g. Windows Media Player - the realtime speed should change from something possibly below 800mhz to 2.2? That's how notebooks work anyway.

I don't think athlon chips have this function where they can downclock their clockspeed. I believe only Intel chips, P3 and P4 have this function speedstep.

Set them all to the lowest settings and bench again. Should get near enough 6,000.

It's called PowerNow (or something similar) and AMD chips do have it, mobile chips do at least, not sure whether a mobile chip in a desktop mobo still does it though. As I mentioned, that WCPUID program has a realtime clock checker if you wish to test this .

I set the card to optimal performance (lowest settings) and I got 5876 3d marks. Still dissapointed

I was feeling disapointed too about my scorees considering my system is hardocp's must have hardware for doom 3, however I was told that these programs are synthetic and do not utilize amd chips as much and not to believe the hype about those programs. I hope you feel a little better
