I would give my left one to see this company come back with something to clean the market up. What I mean by that is remeber the 9700 pro? That was the last card anyone bought that REALLY made ahuge difference in gaming. I mean the fps were insane when compared to Nvidia.
I really miss 3DFX...anyone else? :(

Wha? This generation was a bigger jump in performance than the 9700 pro. It just wont be as memorable, as the next generation will be a big jump too.

Going from a GeForce3 to a GeForce6800 was a healthy jump for though.

You do know that 3dfx is never coming back right?

Maybe people from it might start something.
But they were purchased by nvidia, so all thier IP and trademarks, patents, etc all belong to nvidia.

maybe a company could start named 3d-efx or something, but it would be similar in name only.

If you look at what you can do with this gens top end, 6800U SLI vs 9800XT/5900U, and the 9700Pro vs 8500/Ti4600, the 6800U SLI is a much bigger leap forward.

Yep, all good points.
I guess the 9700 pro sticks out so much cause we went from the gf3 and the ati 9200 or something and bam, we got huge frame rates.
I know the name 3dfx is gone but your right, the people still could form again. I don't think it will ever happen but who knows.
Remember the voodoo2 SLI? Those 3dfx started it all. :)

I recently went from a GForce 3 ti500 to a 6600 GT and it's leaps and bounds better. I don't know wtf you are talking about.

i went from a 9600 pro to a 6800GT and BAM massive frame rates

the current gen doubled performance of the high end cards from the last gen (ie, 9800XT)... i dont see how this isnt a jump... or why the 9700 would stick out more, other than the fact that it was the first dx9 class card that really kicked ass.

i really dont see hte point, teh current gen of cards is awesome... and we are all aware that 3DFX did "SLI" first, but really, nvidia's bears no resemblemce whatsoever to teh 3DFX version except for the name, and ATI had been doing dual-processing video cards before 3DFX had SLI.

3DFX will never form again, most of htem are employed by Nvidia at this point, and nVidia owns all rights, monikers and licenses taht were part of 3DFX, from the name to the technology behind the cards... hell, the FX series was based on Rampage ;)

8500->9700Pro approximately doubled performance, and 98XT->X800XT doubled it again. I don't agree with the inclusion of SLI in raw performance figures, because you should also factor pricepoints in. The 98XT was about $500MSRP, as was the X800XT. If the next ATI card doubles performance again but costs $700+MSRP, I will still question the validity of "doubles the framerates." It'll be true, but it'll also appeal to a different market segment.

1) Yes, a number of key people are off at Nvidia and the 3dfx spin off companies as well (Quantum3D, CG2, Ultracade)

2) They don't own all the right's to the 3dfx card tech, but a good chunk.

3) Parts of the 4 series cards were based on the Rampage core, but not very much.

Rumor has it that one of the higher ups in 3dfx had the designs for the follow up to Rampage when he left but the time to use those plans would have been 4 years ago.

huh. i had heard that FX was based on older 3DFX tech, which is why i associated it with rampage... guess i was wrong, any idea if its based on anything from 3dfx?

whats "CG2, Ultracade"

got any links.

also did you know 3dfx had military contracts

yup.. thats right. they put graphics card in the apachie helo through quanitum 3d.

pretty neat.

He is not saying it is not a jump going from last get to a 9800XT..Sounds like he is just saying that the 9700pro sticks out (to him) because it was actually widely available and was a large improvement over what was available before it.

im just saying, that the same exact thing happened this gen, if you were to upgrade a a 9200 to a 6800 GT, you would expierence the same thing (taking a card two gens back like the GF3 when the 9700 came out)

*shrug*

Exactly :)

Like others have said, the 6800 ultra leap from the 9800xt level cards was huge, much like the jump which happened when the 9700 was released. The difference of the two leaps probably stems from the fact the 9700 was seen as more of a technological update as opposed to a raw fps one. The 6800 touted all new 'technologies' but they werent utilised to the same degree the 9700's ones were so people still remember the 9700's prowess over the newer generation cards in that respect.

I personally went from a Ti500 (still awesome card) to a 6800gt and it went quite a bit faster, well, quite alot faster. On that note though, if i could go back, i'd have saved my money and kept the Ti cause it still ran HL2 with good graphics friggin well, Doom 3 and Far Cry too. Makes me sad knowing its now in a computer used solely for surfing the net when it served my thrashings for 4 years without a hiccup. I only bought my 6800gt for stalker but it was delayed so i was all like :(

Anyway, im done heh.

It's "best of" to "best of"- and the nV40 allows for SLI. Price is irrelevant because we're talking performance jump, not which card was the best deal.
