I was looking into 3D monitors and it looks like everyone will have a 23.6" pretty shortly with 1920X1080 res. using LG panels. Asus also sort of announced they will be makign a 27" 120hz 3D monitor but with the same res as the other ones.

Most of us know that any higher resolution with 3D (120hz) would require insane gpu requirements that only $1000 worth of cards could handle so it doesn't make much sense for anyone to make a 27" with resolution like the Dell 2711 has.

That said, money not being a factor, would it make much sense to get a 27" over a 23.6" even though their resolutions are the same? its like buying a 65" TV for DVD quality, kind of loose the point of a larger TV when the image quality goes down too much.

Now I am even wondering if I should hold off and get a 27" high res monitor instead of going 3D. I would love the larger screen and resolution but would also like the 3D for certain games.

120Hz for resolutions higher than 1920x1200 would require HDMI 1.4 or Displayport 1.2. DVI Dual-Link can't do it, HDMI 1.3 and earlier can't do it, Displayport 1.1 and earlier can't do it.

This Nvidia article seems to tell me that any Nvidia card with HDMI can be upgraded to HDMI 1.4 with just software. I'm not sure if I believe that or if I understand the article correctly.

I have been trying unsuccessfully to find info about what versions of Displayport the latest ATi cards have. Displayport 1.2 was only just finalized in December 2009, so I'm not sure if it will even make it into the Eyefinity6 card.

So I am left uncertain whether there are any currently available video cards or monitors with HDMI 1.4 or Displayport 1.2.

There is this thread where the last post claims to have gotten 120Hz 3D gaming working on a Sapphire 5970 OC and a 27" iMac. It seems unbelievable to me that they have the 27" iMac panel operating at 120Hz. This can't be right. Surely he must be mistaken about what he is doing, and must be running it at 60Hz instead?

That was in November and as evilsofa stated DisplayPort v1.2 has only recently been finalised.

I'm also quite interested if there are any DP v1.2 cards planned such as the Eyefinity6 as that would be the only way to get Eyefinity 3D up and running. That is of course if there are 120Hz panels with DisplayPort v1.2 of which I haven't found any yet either.

evilsofa that iMac link isn't referring to 120Hz 3D, I think they just mean a 3D game.
