3d Mark 3k pts lower?!

Ok, I'm a bit confused. A few months ago, I ran 3d mark 01 and scored a 16800. This is with the setup you see in my sig. I'm not sure if that's an ok score or not, but it plays the games I like, so I didn't complain.

I was having problems with my pc. Games and Windows XP were giving me hell, so I reinstalled the OS.

I ran 3d Mark again shortly after and my score has gone down almsot 3000 pts!

I OC my 2500, it's running at 2.2GHz - I'm not OCing the Graphics card.
In case it's not in my sig, it's a Sapphire 9800 pro 128 MB.

I bought an aftermarket cooler for the gpu and heatsinks for the RAM and it has not made a diff. I went as far as OCing the card using the ATI tool to around 400/385 or so. Still made no differerence.

Case temp is 22C - The athlon runs on full load about 42C.

I put in this new Corsair TwinX Memory and it upped the score a whopping 400 pts

Anyway, any ideas? It's an R350 chip on the card
Is there anything in particular I should be looking for?
And is there any diagnostic software that might be able to tell me what, if anything is wrong?

OH, and I have used both the newest omega drivers and the newest ati drivers

you went from 16800 to around 13800?

so something in your system specs obviously changed. Did you change any settings in your Bios?

Do you have anti-aliasing or anisotropic filtering enabled. Those increase IQ but drecrese fps quite a bit.

In the BIOS, no. Dunno if something software-wise has changed. I have just reinstalled the OS and am seeing what happens there. Maybe I'm a victim of a Microsoft FUNK. How do you adjust those settings outside of the BIOS? I don't remember messing with any driver settings, but I could have in the past.

I sure did. Matter of fact, I'm installing the most updated ones now.

But I have not had this problem before and have never updated the drivers after an OS install.

And to add to this awful experience. I can't play doom for more than 5-7 minutes without it rebooting.

I try to run 3d mark now and it will reboot about half way through the benchmark. I have a bad feeling my video card is crapping out on me.

Again, anyone know of any diagnostic software for this stuff?

Hmm, maybe I missed it and it's in your sig but what kind of powersupply are you running? How many watts and what brand? Also, you might try running your cpu @ stock and see if that affects anything. I can't think of anything else to try atm, good luck.

400 Watt Sparkle PS. Thanks for the input

I will try running stock and see what happens.

GET THIS! I updated the BIOS from 1007 - 1010

I tried to run 3d mark 01 and it crashed almost immediately

I ran it again... and BAM 17621

Did the exact same thing on reboot

Ran 3d mark 01 and it crashed almost immediately

Then BAM! Ran it again and it scoreda 17761

Since my last post, I have rebuilt the system and reseatted the vid card along with reseating all of my power connections.
I have also gone as far as disconnecting my cathode lights from power in case it was a power problem.

Is 400w not enough for my system? (sig)

it should be enough, but I definatly would recommend an upgrade to an Antec 480 if you got some cash to burn, that will make it a bit more stable.

also what are your voltages?

Hmm that's odd, as far as I know sparkle makes decent power supplies. If you have another I would test it out w/ that and see what happens. 400watts should be enough btw. Does it work every other time? Or is it random, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. Every other time is bizzare. Hmm maybe you got some bad ram, although I doubt it you have nice corsair stuff but u might want to run memtest and see what that gets. http://www.memtest86.com/ <----- try running that. Can't think of anything else atm hope thats helpful. Good luck.

Lol this is so bizzare I just got an e-mail saying DaCoOlNeSs replied to this thread but when I clicked the linky his post was before mine. That doesn't make any sense.

Delay in the email system

Im stumped Roy. Your getting high 3dmark speeds again, but you keep crashing. Try omega ati driver perhaps. Or just reinstall the cat 4.7's again/

V1P3R - You Da Man.

I ran the memtest and right off the bat it started reporting badram errors. Will be standing in line to exchange these babys at the dog and pony show (return counter) at Frys after work. I popped in my old memory - and 3dmark ran like a champ hitting just above 17000 on 3d mark.

This was a real confusing one, but I relized since updating the BIOS from 1002 to 1007, I had never run 3d mark until the last few days. It was scoring in the 16000s with 1002. Only scored 13000s with 1007. Now that I have updated to 1010 - it actually improved my score back up to the 17000s. That will be nice when I get working RAM and i'm scoring in the upper 17000s :) Maybe i can push this sucker to the 18000s :D

Hey people, thanks alot for your help, this was definitely a hair puller. Hopefully I can help you folks out at some point.

BTW-Anyone with a similar setup score about the same?

Glad I could help :D I get about the same score w/ my rig, I would get higher but I've been having problems w/ ocing my video card lately (doom3 related). When you get that new ram I would run memtest again as soon as u get it just to make sure you didn't get a bad stick again and have to go through that hassle again. Good luck!

Oh yeah! Already had that in mind. I wasted an entire weekend trying to sort this stupid thing out

I'm on it

Any problems with the new sticks? Or have you even gotten them yet?

Get this. I get the new sticks, and 5 seconds into 3d mark - REBOOT... AAARRRRGGG

BUT......

I turned off my 2 cathode tubes and switched the memory from slots 1&3 to slots 2&3 and ran 3d mark successfully 3 consecutive times. They scored in the upper 17000s. Now I'm going to test my fps on doom 3.

Next I'm going to turn on my tubes again and see if I can run 3d mark a few times. The more I think about it and tweak with this headache of a project, I think I'm having power issues. We'll have to see when I turn the tubes back on.

I will defintely report back.

Hmm switching ram slots made it stop rebooting? Maybe there is a problem with the memory controller on the motherboard? But then the turning off the cathode tubes and it working sounds like a power problem. Did the new sticks pass memtest? Man I would hate to be in your situation right now you seem to be having a ton of problems. Hope it works out for you, good luck.

No, didn't run mem test. Stayed up kinda late and forgot to run it before bed. Oh well, I'll run it today.

Turning on the cathode tubes didn't make a difference. The RAM is now working beautifully in slots 2&3. I kinda feel like a stooge considering my new proc and mobo will be here in a couple days and I won't even have to deal with the ram on the board, but oh well. I couldn't help but try to fix it :)

Downloaded the new ati drivers last night also and was able to break 18000 on 3d mark '01. 3dmark 03 doesn't work because of some funky sound problem, but oh well. I should trying installing the regular drivers for my SB Live instead of the windows drivers and see what happens.

Also, before the new drivers - was running 59.9 fps on the doom time demo. After the drivers, running 67.9

These new drivers for ati cards seeme to be gems :)

Thanks again for the help brother.

What kind of proc and mobo are you getting? The new drivers crashed to desktop for me after about 15 mins of doom3 :(. Good luck.

Abit AV8 mobo + A64 3500+ :)

I already have the proc, the mobo should be here by thursday. with any luck, today or tomorrow
