I'm looking to build a system for 3D animation. Just wondering if anyone out there can tell me which chip (Intel or AMD) and chipset, would be best suited for the task. I will be using Lightwave 3D, Maya, and Softimage'. Along with video editing and DVD burning..

I will max out the Ram, and a lot of HD space. Also wondering what kind of video card would work. Not looking for FPS but rendering power. Just looking for anyone who has had this question before..

P4 definatley. Look at the 3.4+ chips and OC them to around 4GHz.
Maybe look at the higher end Quadro cards if your budget can handle it.
But a x800 with 256 or 6800 with 256MB should do fine.

i wouldnt reccomed overclocking, especially when your sceens get really complex maya gets a little flaky (in 6.0 at least) hopefully 6.5 will be a little better so unless your system is like 99% stabel, well... save a lot ;)

The main thing you should look for is memory preformance, which the athalon 64 seems to have a lead on pentium 4 at the moment, and depending on how much money you want to spend on the system you may want to 1) get as much ram as possible at leats 1gb and 2) consider 2 processor systems ie xeon and dual opteron and finally 3) a vid card with at least 64mb ram min

Well I've never used Lightwave or Maya but I did use PovRay and it was very CPU intensive..

Make sure to get a good 3d card if you can't afford the quadros and whatnot (but then you'll be able to afford those software packages?) Using hardware rendering can save you a lot of time getting everything set for your final renders.
