$399 R9 290X

They announced this a couple weeks ago, we just didnt know the new pricing till today.

Nothing we didn't really expect. Doing what they have to do to buy themselves time until they can drop there next-gen lineup.

Dropping nearly 200 dollars off your top video card is pretty damn impressive to me.

If someone was considering Crossfiring two 290Xs they just got pretty lucky, in my opinion.

What would impress you? Giving them away for free?

$299 would be impressive considering a 970 is cheaper and trades blows.

Edit: don't get me wrong, the price is better for someone already invested in AMD hardware as now you can go with a new one for less or a used one for even more savings.

just exactly that.. its good for anyone with an actual 290-290X card but no for anyone wanting to upgrade to a new card.... I was really hoping to see at 350$.. 300$ would have impressed me :D

Wait, what?? I thought I was losing my mind for a moment. The 970 is cheaper at Amazon, Newegg and probably everywhere else. What are we (mostly you) talking about?

I'm looking at a bunch of models that are $340-350 on Amazon. Lol. For a moment, I read cheaper than $299. I was like, "Oh, you're right." But then, no, not really since we're talking about a $399 290x vs a $340 970. For what it's worth, I'm in the US.

Amazon doesn't have anything near $329-359 in stock. Everything says SHIPS IN 1 to 5 WEEKS.

This is where AMD is going to keep up with decent sales. I am temped by Crossfire R290's for 1080p gaming on a 73". Actually I am tempted out of spite for releasing an overall underpowered card on a waaaaaaaaay mature 28nm process, with not as much energy efficiency as demonstrated since EVERY single person is clocking these well above 200 watts. And really having to overclock for RAW performance numbers that are not there for a "next gen" reference card. A flag went up in most peoples minds soon as Jen-Hsun Huang said "Comparing to 680 not 780". Sad thing is I was almost a dummy and bought one of these cards. Nvidia not screwing us?? Yeah, that's why the 549 and not 499 price. Nvidia knows full well these games coming out requiring more than 4GB of memory. NVidia works with game developers, so why only 4GB?? Are you honestly going to tell me Nvidia didn't know this new Mordor game uses 6GB of VRAM??? But releases their top end card with only 4GB 3 weeks before its release? Business. Lemmings still ran out and bought them. Would love to see the actual mark up on this series.

My initial observation still stands that this 900 series will be a limited run and in short supply till the new year. Throw out a GTX960 and 990 and wait it out. No Titan 2 or Ti needed. Just a place holder series.

Being smug? Nope. Just a realist. Just watching the fleecing of the gaming community continue by Nvidia. "We have 100's of engineers working on these cards for you guys!" Really? And not one dumbass looked at games already released and coming out "that you partnered with" and said "we need at least 6GB or 8GB on our top tier Jen." Jen" screw it. We will double up in March 2015 and they will buy it then." 100's of Engineers TINY LITTLE VRAM :p

You are trying way too hard to make Nvidia look like the bad guy here. They just released a new series of cards that set higher standard for overall performance, power effeciency, and enthusiast performance per dollar. They launched these cards into a market where AMD has been fleecing people on R9 prices, and AMD still isn't cost competitive against a GTX 970 after price drops. And somehow this makes Nvidia a terrible company because the cards don't have 6GB of VRAM for Shadow of Mordor?

Have you even played Shadow of Mordor? It looks good, but certain not like a game that should be eating up 6GB of VRAM on a PC.

You do realize SoM plays just fine for the most part, right? Even with the ultra textures. On a 970. My friend has one, lol, and the game too. Has been playing it at 1080p for the past week or so.

Also, I'm not sure why you are trying so hard to insist that one cannot find a 970 or 980. I could order one right now on Newegg. I saw them go out of stock, back in stock and out of stock the past few weeks. The price for a 970 is still lower than a 290x @ $330-350. The performance of the 970 is still as good or better than a 290x.

The only thing I agree with is that if one already has a 780, 780Ti, perhaps a Titan, these cards are not a major upgrade. However, one would be getting more ram, power savings, and cool (IMHO) software features with the 900 series.

Once again, the pricing for the 290, 290x is better than it was a week ago and those that already own these cards can now grab them for less for a performance boost.

Prime I love my 980s but $250 is kind of crazy-low for a R9 290X. They perform better most of the time out of the box compared to a GTX 970. I'd say more like $299.99-$329.99.

BTW keep up the excellent shipping service at Amazon <-- I keed I keed :D
 
$349 for a XFX R9/290x (after a $30 MIR) is a hell of a steel for the performance. My 290X hovers around 70c for temps and keeps a full clock speed with no throttling down. I pad $450 for it earlier this year.
 
again what resolution do you game at? the 290s will match and beat the gtxs at higher resolutions
