3930K or 3770K ?

Which one would you go with?

I have absolutely no use for games. Will be used for development and other applications which run 24/7. Some photoshop/lightroom. Possibly some additional vm's. Needs to have at least 12-16GB of ram. Not too concerned with overclocking, stability is the most important.

Not really concerned with the price difference between the two chips.
 
For more future proof go with the 3930k plus if you're going all out for that rendering and whatnot you're gonna wanna spend the most money. Having worked in the labs in our school you can really take advantage of everything a cpu has to offer when it comes to rendering and spending that extra money will probably be worth it.

I have no use for rendering.
 
Definitely 3930k. And load it up on RAM.

Also: Sandy Bridge-E has virtualization support in the hardware. You mentioned VMs, so this feature may be useful.

Why even ask then? If money is no object, then the more expensive one will usually be better. In this case, you're getting 6 cores over 4 so anything that can take advantage of multiple cores/threads will see an improvement (sometimes large, sometimes small) on the 3930K. Just be sure to get a decent cooler.

Whats wrong with the stock cooler? And because I'm not too concerned about the $$$ doesn't mean that I should burn $400. For the money, the 3770k seems to be a good deal.

The IB chips have the Intel Quick Sync capability and a pretty decent built in GPU (since he said he's not gaming)

SB-E has massive memory and PCI-e 3.0 bandwidth but not the Quick Sync stuff.

If he's using Photoshop or doing transcoding, then it's possible that with Quick Sync, the IB system could be a lot faster at certain tasks.

It's very case specific though.

I personally want SB-E to add more over powered video cards, but the IB platform has some interesting benefits for people who do useful things on their PC.
 
as everyone already said, go with the 3930k if you can and the 16gb (or more) of ram, this will be better for VMs and such

if you want to save some money on the cpu front, go with the 3770k as it will most likely suffice as well even though it has less cores, it is a bit better clock for clock

if you want a lot of vms and such though, just go with 3930k

you were quite general on the applications you mentioned. perhaps if you had a more realistic scope of apps (and budget), the decision would be more clear.

I admit to not knowing as much about possible changes in IB vs. what was in SB. But quicksync is not a professional tool. It is a relatively simple profile specific function for encoding and decoding video quickly. Its great for someone ripping an AVI to a smaller file. Or playing back a large resolution video completely using the CPU without the CPU having to kick power up. Even if a user could support Quicksync in Adobe premiere, no professional should as you have no control over bit rate, IQ quality, and several other settings if you want to use it.

Now if your talking about Adobe supporting OpenCL through the actual graphics adapter, that's one thing. But the quick solution and one already covered in here would be a discrete adapter. Adobe already supports CUDA, now by supporting OpenCL, a user could get 7970 or 680 where either one would be an order of magnitude faster then anything the IGP could pump out. If you wanted to offload to GPU this work in a work setting, in an expensive machine, then you get a true GPU.

More cores will be better for the VM's and some of the video work.

and rumours are afloat about IV-E comming to LGA2011 eventually. so you
can grab one then? maybe? ::shrug::

Because the 3920 is still just a quad core, 8 thread

3930K - overclocking or not, has 6 cores, 12 threads.

This profile is begging for a workstation, possibly dual-socket, with ECC RAM.

Given your habits, I would opt for a 3930K as well. You may or may not miss the money spent, but you'll definitely miss the performance if your work is anything to go by. ;)

To answer your question about the stock cooler, there is no stock cooler bundled with any of the SB-E CPU's. :D Intel left it up to the user to reuse or buy their own cooler, which makes sense considering the market they are appealing to. They have left the option open to purchase one of their Intel branded cooler options as well, but if you're going to spend the money anyway, might as well get a decent aftermarket one - even if it is a cheap Cooler Master Hyper 212 +:

3930K rocks, period. People had complained about this and that with them but that's probably their justification of not buying one because they are expensive. Oh well, waa waa.
