I was curious what you guys thought. Should I get another 3870 with the prices being so low now and run crossfire, or sell the one I have and buy a 4870 with 1gb of ram on it when they come out?
 
Just get 1 4870, Less mess with crossfire, no micro-stuttering (that depends on you really), and a better feature set. :D
 
Just to put another spin on it, it can be handy to have two video cards when you need to test another computer or if one fails you aren't stuck with nothing. Not really a deal breaker, just a benefit from having two cards. Of course two cards also produce twice as much heat and probably suck twice as much power.
 
I think the 4870 outperforms 2x 3870's quite easily - less noise, heat and power power consumption too.

More enthusiast-class motherboards should come with built-in graphics. My m-ATX board comes with integrated X1200 which was very handy - I was able to sell my 8800GT before the 4850/70 was released and rely on the integrated GPU for a few weeks, then buy a 4850 for almost the same price I sold my 8800GT for :) Same if I ever have to RMA my videocard - I can still do everything with the computer except play the latest games.
 
you can always XF a 3870 and 4850 together lol...
If money is a problem for you, I would just get another 3870 as they are cheap
 
the problem is the 3870 is a GDDR4 so I don't know what it would do lol but since both have 512MB, it should work fine.
 
explosion and both catch on fire lol but seriously i would suggest op sell his 3870 and get a 4870 512mb
 
One thing is HD 3870 XF is slightly faster than the HD 3870X2. While looking at the 3870X2 reviews against a single HD 4870, it's not as fast but is still is pretty good.
 
i dont know the hard review of the 4870 having it spanking the 3870x2. and the x2 runs somewhere along the lines of a 4850
 
A single 4870 is quite a bit faster than two 3870s in Crossfire, and it also won't suffer from any scaling issues or microstuttering. The single card would definitely be better.

i think NV heard you there! thats their new plan for all their motherboards. so they can push HybridPower. i think the new 790GX board has that too, fast IGP but high end MB. sad about the AM2 socket tho!
