I really would like to utilize my 790fx chipset by running at least 2 3870's maybe even three. Question is will I see a performance upgrade if I do? I have seen benchmarks that say one thing or another, but I would really like to hear from someone who utilizes this technology personally.

Actually, it depends a lot on the game. Some games do well, some don't. Hopefully AMD/ATI will fix things with drivers on games that don't.
 
Has anyone seen a comparison (3870's vs 8800's) where they use the AMD 7series chipset and AMD processor in the benchmarks against the Intel Chipset/Processor? I mean i see alot of comparisons that have the ATI cards running on Quad Extremes and thats fine and all but that means they miss out on the AMD chipsets and it would be cool to see if that makes a difference.

Well, I can only answer the question in the thread's title, since I never used the 790 chipset.
In terms of performance the HD 3870 and 8800 GTS 640 are pretty much evenly matched without AA. With AA on, the GTS 640 wins in most cases.
 
The 3870s can be great cards, but they do not run any better on an AMD platform, and in fact you could possibly be bottlenecking your performance because the AMD platform lacks a high powered CPU at the moment.

If you want to maximize the performance of your ATI cards you'd be better going off with an Intel setup, so that you don't risk CPU limiting your performance. But either way most games these days are more dependent on the GPU and given the same video cards, an Intel CPU at the same price will be either identical in performance, or slightly faster.

There is no innate benefit to running 3870s on the new AMD chipset. They market it as the "Spider" platform, but there is no special magic when you combine them. Whether you like Nvidia cards or ATI cards, Intel CPUs are the only way to go right now for the best performance for your dollar.

(The ultra-low end excepted maybe, sub $500 boxes may be better off with an AMD CPU)
