3870 slow performance??????? Help me!

400Watt PSU with 29 amps on the 12V.

Scores:

3dmark 2001: 24000 ish
3Dmark 2006: 7500 ish

Windows Vista 32bit (home premium) Catalyst 7.12.

Dell 228LCD (22 inch)

These seem really low to me....Think it may be the ram and PSU that are choking the videocard, going to do some more fiddling when i get home from work, but i was up till 2 am trying to figure this out.

any suggestions? Drivers????

I have...
CPU: X2 5600
Graphic Card: 3870
RAM: 2gig of ddr 800
PSU: 500W with 30amps on 12v

3DMark 06 Score: 9575

Just today I upgraded to the 3870 from the X1950XT. Running Crysis at the exact same settings that I did with the X1950XT, which is also the same settings that this site tested the 3870 ( http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTQxOSw0LCxoZW50aHVzaWFzdA== ), I only got a 3fps increase (from 15 to 18fps). This site, using the Intel's X6800, got 34fps.

The reason why I suspect it is our CPUs is if you check out this site:

you will see that the X6800 (which this site used) is 15fps faster then my X2 5600 (what I am using) running the game Prey at the same settings (and hardware, except for CPU of course). So add that 15fps to my 18fps that I am getting in Crysis and you get 33fps, which is very close to what this site got using the X6800 with the 3870. I don't know if this is a good correlation, but I cant find a comparison like this using Crysis, and I don't have Prey

I don't claim to know a whole lot. So you may want to wait to hear from a pro on this issue (I know I will).

*UPDATE* I check some of the other game comparison between my CPU and the X6800, it is not consistent, so no correlation between the two games (duh, I should have known). With Quake IV there was a 26fps increase using the X6800 (running same hardware and in game settings). I still however think its your CPU (and ram).
 
Ugh, I should just shut up. I went and gave Crysis another try after noticing a significant performance increase in my other games. Don't know what happened since that time, but Crysis is now running around 35 - 50fps (depending on whats going on). I guess there must have been some application in the background hogging the computer's performance.

You should ignore my last post. :D

By the way what was your score (in 3DMark 06) on your OC CPU?
 
I dont know what is happening either but it is scoring much better now. 8933 in 3Dmark 06- was 7500ish

Weird.

CPU score is around 1700 or so i think....not sure.

I installed the card in my main system (sig) and got over 10,000, so i know the card is not defective. We will be upgrading the power supply tomorrow.

What resolution was this test done at?

I have a Biostar Tforce 550, and an AMD x2 5000+ black edition OC 3.0ghz... DDR2 800 4gb, and an ATI 3870 under Vista x64, In 3dmark06 I get roughly 9600 in the 1280x1024 resolution.

I'm on a Opteron 170 @ 2.8 Ghz with DDR500 Memory and with my 3870 at stock I score around 9546 in 3dmark06.

Also Wendig is that score with a stock 3870?
 
My 3850 scores about 9,500. I don't know if its the CPU, isn't 3DMark more GPU centric anyway?
 
AM2 X2 3600+ is 512Kb L2 x 2.
Brisbane core.

It seems as though i have it scoring about what it should be considering the rest of the system.
I am now getting 8960 or so.

It is overclocked a little bit but I'm trying to remember what I got before I overclocked it which was near 10,000 if I remember right.

Anyways to the original poster, use driver cleaner pro and that will give you some more performance. After I installed my card and the drivers I ran 3dmark and got an okay score then I used driver cleaner and I gained 500 marks.
 
Check to see if your gfx driver is configured to output to 2 displays (assuming you only use 1).
After installing a new driver, mine was somehow set to 2 monitors without my knowing and gave me a substantial performance drop in some things.
Setting it back to 1 monitor made things nice and snappy again.
