3850 AGP = XP Only?

well, interesting that its a dx10 card but cant use it in vista.. oh well... seems like nothing new...

I think they assume that anyone who will still be buying AGP cards certianly wont care to run Vista.

That would be a bad assumption to make.

I think many people looking at this card would like to use it in older computers for their HTPCs using Vista Media Center.

They should correct this quickly.

I thought this was interesting... If this is the case ATI needs to get their act together...

Vista doesn't support AGP HD 3850

Yes, it is the Inq.

It has nothing to do with ATi.... it has somethign to do with the companies who partner with Ati like sapphire .. putting ther VENDOR id's into the driver

and if u force vista to use to pci-express version driver it will work fine... you just cant overclock it with catalyst control center

the next driver rev... will fix it

it works in vista...

it works... u just have to use 2 force the pci-xpress driver...

next cat rev will fix it.... shortly

This issue should be resolved quickly since it appears to be an easy one to fix. All they need to do is add the DeviceID strings from the various manufacturers and everything should be fine. This should be done by the time Cat. 8.3 is out.

Nvidia's Official Forceware Drivers had the same problem and still do I believe, with the XFX 7950GT and 7900GS AGP cards. I either had to get my pre-modded Forceware Driver Set directly from XFX themselves or modify the two files myself by adding the cards DeviceID strings. It was very easy to do, so most of the time I did it myself.

Edit:

Looks like we cross-posted POPEGOLD, so we obviously agree.

Yeah i would hate someone to NOT BUY the card based on the title of this thread which is off based

thats part of being [H] is getting the facts out there to help the readers

POPEGOLD is also correct about using the current Cat.8.2 Drivers. Saw this over on Guru3D. Al you need to do is begin the intsall process so the files are unarchived. After the Cat install routine quits because it doesn't recognize the card's DeviceID. Open Device Manager and do a "Manual" install of the Driver. The CCC will not work however as POPE also mentioned. EIther that or use the Driver Install shipped with the card which was already tweaked by the manufacturer.

good job with the follow up details... :D

Got the card this morning. Have it installed in XP and Vista (dual boot) with absolutely no issues what so ever. Was the smoothest install Ive done in quite some time. Just used the drivers on the disk.

Vista did come up with the 8.2 installed but just to make sure, I uninstalled them and put the ones that are on the disk.

So far no issues what so ever.

And Oblivion wow... gotta go find the hirez goodies for it now :)

Great to hear. Have fun and let us know how you do. I love playing with new toys, I'm almost jealous. :)

Very nice indeed. Having a good time with this card. Finally was able to install some hirez textures for Obliv and wow.. instead of some blurry wall you see it sharp and very realistic. Before on my poor old 6800GT and the 1950Pro totally choaked and coughed and begged me to reinstall without these textures... this card.. just smiles and booogies.

Usual temp .. 42 to 49 right after doing 2hrs of Obliv 52 so no real increase at all.

Downloaded the demo for Ut3 installed it on vista... gotta say wasnt that impressed. Walls were clearly seen, but this game just seems to be wrong.. perhaps cause its just a demo?? Was going to download the demo to bioshock till I saw the size of it.. thought be more fun playing than downloading.

UT 2k4 very excellent.. a bit better than on the 1950 pro, would say frame rates are way over 100..

OH this is interesting Quake4 did NOT like this card so far havent checked into it.
It really looked bad especially in comparison to how it looked on the 1950pro .. Might just do a reinstall on it and see if that helps.. cause it looked pretty nasty.

Call of Duty 2 didnt stay too long on it but looked great... kept getting my butt killed cause I was looking around and not shooting. Getting behind a 50cal was great.. till I got waisted by a guy with a pistol :( too funny..

Tonight think Ill work on Quake 4 and then install serious sam 1 and 2 and what ever else I may find in the closet.

Oh only game that had no real "wow" improvement was Sims2 running under vista though.
Looked fantastic but it did that on the 1950Pro.

No crashes, no heat issues, no flashing, No wierd texture problems or any such things such as that.. so, Im quite happy.
Think quake4 just needs to be set up better/differently??? will find out later tonight.

hey LV, glad to hear your card and psu worked out fine. i got mine today but won't have time to install it until later tonight. :D

I am so tempted to get this card. But, do I bite the bullet and go PCI-e and Core2Duo, or plop another couple of hundred on my AGP setup?

I think if you're running AGP odds are you'll only have 1 core so XP would be a better choice anyway..

Congrats, that's what I was hoping you'd say. :D Sounds like it's working out well for you. If they keep putting out at least one AGP card for every generation of cards that comes along, you'll be able to keep your Rig forever. :p

As far as UT3 goes, I played the Demo and I wasn't to thrilled with it either. Bioshock however is worth the download in my opinion. After playing the Demo I got the full game pretty cheap off EBay which was a good way to go. If you like FPS games it's great. It's the first game I played through multiple times in a long time. Played it the th third time after applying the patch which adds a number of things to the gameplay and fixes a few bugs.

If you're seriously asking yourself the question, it sounds like your ready my friend.

Good to know about Bioshock.. Will check it out further. I do know Ill be getting Witcher in the new edition in may? I think.
Well, Ive thrown everything I can at this card and it just smiles and purrs EXCEPT for quake4. So, its off the system till I get time find out why they dont like each other.
Right now watching Final Fantasy : Spirit Within and wow.. detail is much crisper. Didnt really expect any change in movies but this is nice. Also watched some youtube vids I downloaded and they no longer have any pixilation (sp) very nice indeed.

So, Im a happy camper. Only one thing out of a couple dozen not working and thats not too bad. I also am willing to bet that the fix for Quake 4 is real simple, I just dont know what it is. In that Ive played though it about six times, its no biggie. Oh yea... wait... humm just remembered ATT Tool Tray doesnt work with this card either. Bet it just needs to be updated. Was going to check fan speeds and temps and they werent available. So, in correction only 2 things wont work for me.. on this machine.

i ran a few futuremark benchies.

3Dmark2001

3Dmark2003

3Dmark2005

3Dmark2006

gunna play UT3, Bioshock, ET:QW and Doom3 to check for any goofyness.

EDIT: they all play fine. the newergames actually look better too.

EDIT2: hey LV, i saw that you were having trouble with Q4 so i thought i check it out. so far i have played 30min into the game with no probs. do you have the latest update to the game? i am using the drivers that came with the disc, are you?

Well, thats strange.. Think I have latest update.. will double check today .. and yes using drivers on the disk. Would like to see Quake4 on this card :)
Its probably something very simple like one setting thats wrong, thats the way it usually is.

I wish I were able to overclock my P4 EE 3.4GHz to 3.8GHz, I was barely able to overclock it to 3.73GHz and wasn't completely stable, I was using the stock fan though, even though that Pentium 4 still bottlenecking that card, it's performance still great. The AGP market still there, I'm quite tempted to buy it.

3.7ghz on the stock hsf is pretty good. i have to use a beefy thermalright HS for 3.8ghz.

I just bought a Zalman and allowed me to overclock my Pentium M to 2.70GHz, and for sure I can push it harder, but not needed yet. Wonder how well the overclocking will be for my P4 EE with this Zalman considering other factors like motherboard, PSU and RAM? I still have that CPU around somewhere.

your pentium M is far better than the P4 EE. if i remember my numbers correctly.

Yeah, it's gaming performance is much better, much lower heat dissipation and power consumption, I couldn't ask for more.
