I recently built a new system, and I am having what I am thinking is bad performance. For example I saw a review that said you can get 80 fps when you have a res of 1280x1024 with 16x af and 4x aa in team fortress 2. Where as my set up is having a hard time getting only 20-30 fps in a fire fight with 16af and 2aa on 1280 by 1024.

This led me to run a 3d mark 06 test. I got a score of 6200, and I see other people getting scores of 9000-10000. Anyone have any ideas?

I am running 16x on the pcix, and running the correct stock clocks for the card. I have the updates from microsoft. I am using the omega drivers, and the newest nforce drivers from nvidias web site.

system
asus m2n sli deluxe
4000+ x2 brisbane stock
gigabyte 3850 512mb
2 gig ddr2
550 watt corsair psu

16AF & 2AA Try switching those to "application controlled" and run 3dmark. As to real time gaming, I think 16AF is too much for the card,IMHO. Try 4xAF no AA, as a starting point and work up from there.

just tried running it on application controlled and got a score of 6500 not much better. I tried running tf2 with no aa and no af and it is still going into the 30's.

I mean the fx5900nu I had was a able to play medium at 800x600. Now you telling me this new card can only do 1280x1024 on high with no aa or af?

Is it possible since my cpu not overclocked it is bottle necking the card?

you are switching from nvidia to ATI, you should run driver cleaner at the very least and reinstall the newest catalyst drivers.

if that doesnt work, its best to start from scratch...format.

I just reformated when I got the card. If gpuz says the clocks are 667 and 700, but 3dmark after I finish running it says the clocks are 338 and 300 which one is correct?

There's something definitely wrong with your card or drivers. I'm running TF2 1650x1080 16xAF 8XAA all settings maxed and getting 55-65 fps on @668Mhz. 3DMark06 scored 10120, also @668.

The card downclocks to 300mhz when there arent 3d applications running

OP: You probably arent going to get 9000-1000 with your CPU. The 3dmark06 score is highly dependent on what CPU you have, but even then your score seems low. I get around 8500 in 06 with my 3870 and an AMD x2 at 2.2ghz

Well I am in the process of ocing the processor, currently at 2310. Hopefully I will be able to get 2.7-2.8 on this brisbane. I also got a 64bit vista through my school today, so once I finish ocing I will try reformating again with vista instead of xp pro. Will a 64 bit os make a difference? Thanks for the help guys

You're expecting too much out of that video card, your tf2 scores are ...pretty shitty, source engine is very cpu intensive, to put it bluntly, your cpu sucks.

exactly, your cpu needs to be around 2.6ghz or higher to see those drops into the 30's be gone.

I was able to get the cpu up to 250x10.5 on stock vcore. This got rid of the slow downs and I was able to run 2xaa and 8xaf. I really need to get a better cpu cooler because I was able to get the cpu up to 300x10 with only a slight voltage increase but the temps were getting to high. I am looking into the thermalright ultra 90 but I am having a hard time finding it in stock. If anyone has an idea where I can find one or has an alternative suggestion please let me know.

No TF2 Does not need a much better CPU.
On a single core 4000 still running plain jane DDR and my 3850 with 256 megs I run at 1280x1024 and 4xMSAA and 16AF with all in game settings at the highest. No slow downs what so ever. I think you have a problem.

Well.....

1) Your 4000+ runs at 2.4ghz, his ran 2.1ghz stock.
2) You have no slow downs, he overclocked to 2.5ghz and it fixed his slow downs.
3) Source engine is single-threaded at the minute, so single vs dual is irrelevant.

I have ran plenty of stock vs overclocked on the source engine and TF2 is no different, maybe more beneficial than CS:S or HL2:DM online.

1.8ghz opteron 144 = Forget about it, especially on big servers
3.1ghz opteron 144 = Smoooothhhh

1.8ghz e4300 2mb = decent
3.2ghz e4300 2mb = 100+ fps

2.4ghz q6600 8mb = Good
3.6ghz q6600 8mb = 100+ fps

Scales very well with cpu overclocking, so no he doesn't have a problem.
