3800 series DX 9 compatible?

All the cards are DX9 compatible. The entirety of Nvidia's 8 series and ATI's Radeon HD series. This has been the case for /every/ previous release of DirectX since ~5 so I fail to see why you think it'd change now.

everywhere i look it only specifies dx 10.1
and ive only been around since the nvidia's 6 series so i have very little knowledge in that area
but thanks for enlightening me

It says DX10.1 because it "can" do that, that's their new feature they want to trumpet from the rooftops. It's not the only thing it can do, as only a small portion of the market even has DX10 capable hardware right now. So the HD2xxx, and NVIDIA 8800's can do DX9, DX10, and the HD3xxx can do DX9, DX10, DX10.1.

But the DX10.1 may not matter because it seems with the approach of a new Windows version next year, we may see DX11, and game developers may skip over 10.1 entirely. So it's been labeled by some as a bit of a "spec sheet" feature.

Yeah, Direct X 10 cards are backwards compatible with DX9, 8, 7, etc. You will have no problems in XP, (at least due to DirectX support)

I wonder if Direct X 1 games still work, or if that's so old that all support is dropped. I remember playing this vehicle-based shooter called Havoc on my 2mb Orchid Fahrenheit Video 3D video card back in 1996. It had full Direct X 1 support! IN 3D!!!!
