512mb gddr2 => $85

or

512mb gddr3 => $108

will the gddr3 give me enough performance to justify the extra 20% more cost?
I'm pretty newbie in video card knowledge.

other parts of the build
ip35-e, e2160 (overclocked, hopefully close to 3ghz), 2x1gb g.skill 800

Allways go with DDR3.
DDR2 Bottlenecks GFX cards a considerable amount.

A HD 3650 with 512 MB of VRAM is already a waste, that really doesn't justify the price.

You are better off in finding a good deal for a 256 MB GDDR3 model. Here's one, but it's around the price of the GDDR2 512 model you posted.

I saw that one, but for only 9% more the the 512, I figured it would be worth it. Especially since it will be used with a 22" widescreen. (and 19" dual monitor when not gaming). But, then again it is only 128-bit. So, 512 is probably overkill, but has to be better than 256.....I think :confused:
then there's the performance you gain from being able to put '512mb' in your siggy :D

Well, my boss didn't get paid today like he was thinking. So, now I have the weekend to ponder it over at least.

Well besides the "siggy" thing, you won't get any performance advantage :)

If you can stretch your budget a little bit, look at a HD 3850, 8800 GS, HD 3870 or 9600 GT. All of them will provide a much, much better gaming experience than a HD 3650. Even a 8600 GTS 256 will, and this one should not cost much more than $100 at this point.

Just now I looked at your sig and realized that you have a 8600 GT XXX. That should be about equal to a HD 3650, so why do you want a HD 3650 ? Or was this in fact, something for your boss ?

yea, this is a new build for my work computer
the only thing I will be reusing from the current dell P4 machine is the DL DVD burner
with dell not giving the amd or e2xxx options anymore, I'm able to custom build cheaper than ordering from dell:D

as far as hd3650 vs 8600gt goes, I was trying to use gpureview to get an answer to most of my questions, but it seems that with the difference in chip and card architecture that a pure numbers comparison was not accurate, so I defaulted to the newer

I am on a budget however, the video card being the second to last on the list, basically went as cheap as I could to get the performance I wanted, so I could have as much for the gfx as possible

that being said, +50 for the 3850 is out of the question, unless I can talk him into it, which IS possible
aside from that, is there a reason that this MSI 8600gts should trump this biostar? atitool WILL be used on this card, so the miniscule difference in clock and memory speed is not really a factor, and MIRs really don't count either, I have what I can spend on it now, and that is that (again, barring I can talk him into it)
I will have to do somemore tweaking to be able to fit that 8600gts in there, but I think it's possible
