360 WiFi - USB Adapter

Can you use a normal wifi adapter for 360? I have one coming in a trade that I can use elsewhere, but I'm curious if anyone has already tried it.
 
Like Blauman pointed out, you can use alternative wireless adapters, that plug into an ethernet port, whether it's from Linksys or some other manufacturer.

If you want to hook your wireless up to one of the Xbox 360's USB ports, then you have to use the official Microsoft wireless adapter.
 
I have the MS adapter. It works ok.

What I WISH I would have done is got this:

It would have cost $80 more, but it is 802.11N, and it's more than an adapter.

It is kind of a reverse-router. It sits in your entertainment system, or whatever, and provides 4 ethernet ports to go to whatever devices you want. It then provides the wireless link to the main router for ALL of those devices at the same time.

Unless you want N, that thing is way overpriced. You can do the same thing by getting a WRT54GL Linksys Router and install DD-WRT firmware on it. Then you can use it as a wireless bridge :)
 
I said it was expensive, but so is the MS adapter at $100 :)

And I find that a device dedicated to the job tends to simply work better :)

But hey, if it works for you, cool! I have nothing against Vice-Grip Methodology :)
 
I just still can't believe that MS charges $100 for that mediocre adapter.
 
I spent $20 on a 2Wire wireless gaming adapter off of ebay. It works just fine and I have yet to have any lag issues. Look on ebay for seller Justdeals. They seem to have alot of them. This is kind of an unknown solution and alternative to the Linksys or MS solution so the auctions never go that high. In fact, I've seen quite a few go for less than what I paid. Also, they are new-oem so they aren't remans or refurbs.

It basically is just a wireless adapter with a lan connection instead of a USB. You plug it into your computer to set it up and enter the WEP key. Then, just make sure you have open NAT or a DMZ set on your router (a requirement of Live and not the wireless adapter) and you are good to go.

One last thing, even though it is only 802.11b, I stream music while I'm playing and I have yet to see any lag whatsoever. God's honest truth.
