I've been looking forward to this for a while. It's been tough for me to justify buying a wired 360 controller for my PC when I already have 2 wireless ones.
Apparently this adapter works like a charm and will be shipping in time for Christmas.
I'm looking forward to using my 360 controller for my PC racing games and console ports (like San Andreas and Simpson's Hit & Run).

That would be cool if microsoft will fix issues with pad and GTA:sa, ie can't use should buttons or not having both analog sticks working without using 3d party unsupported hacks. If they get all this worked out I'll be the first to buy it a second time, returned mine to bb after gta:sa issues and didn't want the problem of installing someones hacks. I use the smartjoy from Lik-Sang. :(

Hmm...I'm going to try GTA:SA when I get home today. Haven't played it in a long time. But I've been using my 360 pad with NFS:MW, NFS:Carbon, Pro Evolution Soccer 6, Fifa 2007, Madden, and FSX, and haven't had ANY issues with getting all the buttons and both analog sticks to work.

You can't run GTA:SA using all of the buttons/analog stick? Strange. I'm on a Geforce 8800GTX and the drivers break that game, but I played through the whole game on my older 6800GT using a a Nyko Airflo and a normal Logitech analog pad. What sort of issues are you having?
Anyway, this adapter's gonna be the bomb. The 360 controller is great for anything not using a d-pad and it's nice that Vista and "Games for Windows" will have enhanced support for that pad. It's actually a HUGE step forward for PC gaming IMO. Right now there's no "standard" layout for buttons or even analogs on the PC. My Airflo and Logitech pads both look similar, yet the button layout is totally different and even the analog sticks are totally backwards. The 360 pad and "Games for Windows" is the first really standard PC controller since the days of the old school SNES pad clones.

I think the Xbox pad is just an unconventional device because it has analog triggers which are not common (if they even exist) on PC game pads. I have never seen one with them. When games map these triggers to buttons or mouse movement like the X and Y axis, these buttons register at 50% pressed and all hell breaks loose.

But you will notice that many PC games (all of them happen to be console ports for now) have the Windows Games stripe on them. One of the conditions that has to be meet to be certified is that the games have to work well with the Xbox controller. As I said, alll of the ones I have seen so far are console ports so there is no surprise that the Xbox pad works with them but hopefully, PC exclusive games will be Windows Games certified too in the future.

i was hopin for something that would include a wireless contoller, a charge-as-you-play kit (or whatever the hell its called), and a wireless adapter for a relatively cheap price.....i wonder if that could ever happen
BTW is there a solid release date?

Oh, that's tits! (yeah, I said it)

Tits!, me too. I'm gonna buy the wireless adaptor so i can use my wireless pad instead of my wired pad (i bought a core 360). Feeling the wire brushing against my leg is really annoying when i'm playing and being able to use my wireless pad would be nice. What i'd like to know is will a wired 360 headset work with the kit or only the wireless headset? That would be really cool if it did. Dont wanna fork out for a wireless headset if possible.

Oh and i'd just like to add. MOIST! (yeah i said that)

I was waiting for this also..I just checked EB and its pushed back to mid Feb so I copped the Cordless Rumblepad 2..Works like a charm..

Is there any way for a specific PC application to use only the headset for audio out and mic?

What I really want is to be able to play games with the game sound coming from surround speakers and voice com (Ventrillo for instance) to be entirely through the headset.

I've only ever been able to have all sound through headphones or through speakers. I don't want to wear headphones all night playing a MMORPG but I also don't want to subject the entire household to raucous Americans talking smack. :D

EDIT: Sorry for being off topic but I was wanting to get this adapter so that I could get the wireless headset for voicecom gaming. Will we have to wait until Vista and Live Anywhere for this kind of multiple audio out fuctionality or is it already possible and me just being a noob? I hear that Vista does audio completely differently with application specific volume/output or something.

Possibly with Vista, but AFAIK, the only way to get headphone audio seperate from speaker audio like you want is to go the way my friends do it. They have 2 soundcards, one does the game, and ventrilo is set to the other one.

Another one connects his headset via USB and it provides its own selectable audio card making this a bit easier for him. (I believe it's a logitech set?)

Yes there is, however it will require 2 sound cards. In 'Setup' for Ventrilo there is an option to select what device you want to use to output sound.

And Finkus, you will need a USB headset for that. You need two seperate audio channels. Audio out is only a single channel. The USB bus can create extra digital sound channels. I have a Plantronics DSP400 USB headset and I have no problem doing what you describe with Ventrilo. However for many games that support voice, they don't have the necessary options to do it but as long as you use Vent, you will not have a problem.

Thanks guys. Just to clarify, my options are:

1) 2 soundcards, one as default audio device and the other selected in Vent.

2) 1 soundcard which is the default and a USB headset that appears as some kind of virtual soundcard itself and can be selected in Vent? Does the XBOX360 adapter act like a USB headset in this fashion as the wireless receiver is USB?

3) Wait for Vista and see what Microsoft are doing with Live Anywhere and voice functionality.

Or do you still need two soundcards even with the USB headsets? If so then will onboard sound plus an X-Fi work?

I currently don't have a soundcard (didn't want to give Creative my cash) and I'm quite happy with the onboard audio from Realtek but if the only option is to use two soundcards I might pick up a PCI card.

Yes, those are your options. With #3, you'll probably still need 2 sound cards or some kind of external device (possible the wireless receiver + wireless headset). There have been a lot of complaints about the wireless headset for the 360, I'd stay away for a bit.

On a related note (related to the wireless adapter), it seems this was pushed back another month. Most stores are expecting it to show up the week after Vista hits now.
I can only assume this is related to the whole "Games for Windows" initiative.

Oh, just an update on the whole XBOX voicecom in Windows thing in case people want to do the same thing.

I downloaded the 'XBOX 360 Accessories Software' for Windows which can be found here http://www.windowsgaming.com/hardware/controllers.aspx

.. and it mentions wired and wireless controllers and headsets. It also talks about having the wireless gaming receiver so I'm guessing this is the software you would get in the box with the receiver as well. This lets you connect 4x controllers and 4x headsets on one PC and comes complete with glowing segment thing on the controller and onscreen when you push the X button on the controller. It's kinda snazzy actually :D

Anyway, to cut a long story short. I plugged in the wired controller that I had, which was attached to the wired headset that came with my 360 and windows detected 3 devices. The controller, the headset and a USB audio device!

Huraah! Didn't need to go out and buy anything! I'm definately getting the wireless receiver and headset though when they are available in the UK. There is no need to fanny around with multiple soundcards as the existing XBOX accessories and the software linked above will let you have you game sound out of your soundcard and voicecom on Vent through the XBOX headset. Easy as pie!
