We gave my son a 1080p TV last month and he used to have a 720p TV. I set his 360 to output at 720p with the old one, and I was going to change to 1080p now but I read where someone said it should still output at 720p for better performance or something like that. I know that 360 games are not 1080p but I thought maybe it was better for the 360 to do the scaling than the TV. What should it be set at or does it really make a difference?

Set the xbox to 1080. It has a really good scalar that doesn't affect performance and is probably better than the one in the TV.

Output resolution doesn't affect performance at all. Set it to whatever you want, 1080p in this case, because the Xbox's scalar is probably better quality than that of the TV. Unlike PC games, consoles render at a specific resolution regardless of what the output res is set to, with just a few exceptions.

Honestly the X360 scaler is there for compatibility and convenience, it doesn't improve picture quality at all. Its good though because if you ever play PS3 you will notice your TV re-calibrating/flicker every time the resolution changes from XMB/dashboard which is 1080p to most games that are 720p. The X360 scaler just simplifies everything, older 480p content or newer "high res" content will all just run at 1080p.

It'll improve picture quality if the 360's scaler is better than the scaler in your TV. I remember reading lots of complaints that the PS3 looked much more shit than the 360 when viewed through computer monitors, since computer monitors typically have terrible built in scalers which the PS3 was relying on, where as the 360 had a decent built in scaler so the monitor wasn't doing any work, just displaying the already scaled image it was given.

It can also make games look slightly sharper. Just like upscaling a 480p dvd.

yep, you're correct. 98% of xbox 360 games display in 720p, so the choice is yours, but 1080 never hurts
