360 Destroys My Wireless

So everytime I turn on my 360 I get Live for about 5-8 minutes, and then it just cuts off and brings the rest of my network down with it. It's usually when I try and connect to a game, either on Halo 3 or COD 4. I can't even connect to the internet on the computer directly connected to the router, let alone the other computers on the network. I then have to unplug both the router and the modem, let them sit for a while, and replug them back in (don't ask, it works for some reason).
I will say that I have a Linksys router, the WRT54G, and it is probably the culprit of my problems. I used to have to do this restart thing many times, and it would fade in and out on how often I had to do it. But considering that it has worked fine for me up until the last week or so, something else may be amiss.
Anyone know what I can do to get my Live back?

It is your router if you want a recommendation go with Zykels 550 router. Check newegg it runs the exact same that firmware Dlinks gamer router does and has WAY better firmware then a linksys. You can even back up ur router settings and has a manual on/off switch for wireless on it. I have had it for 2 months coming from a linksys wrv200 and it hasnt knocked off once yet. I have a wireless wii, tivo, and 360 right next to each other and never have any problem staying connected.

Sounds more like you're behind a NAT if it's knocking your whole connection out. Hook the 360 up directly to your connection (no router) and see if you have problems.

Now that you mention in when I play Halo sometimes it gives me some grief about NAT. How would I fix that?

This is a common problem with the WRT54G (google it)

I have the same exact problem when I sign onto the PSN on my PS3. Its caused by the router's UPnP. What you need to do is go into the router settings and disable UPnP, then put your xbox's local IP in DMZ mode OR port foward it with the correct XBL ports.

Linksys claims they fixed this problem with the last firmware update but they lie because its still not fixed.

May not be able to fix it if it's a NAT set up at your provider. Do you have the same problems when ya hook your connection straight to your 360? If so, need to call your internet provider and ask them if they can open the ports needed for the 360.

the wrt54g is a piece of shit , and i own one. Seriously it sucks!

its better then a lot of routers out there. my last one before it was a u.s. robotics and it was hell compared to this.

i must say tho with the 360 wired i do have some probs. i know nothing bout networking and dont even understand post 5....port forwarding is beyond me

whatever happened with U.S. robotics, they were taking over 56k modems, and now mangling networks.

dont answer that, I dont want to hijack this thread.

I went through a whole series of linksys routers including the wrt54G and would never use them again. They had serious problems with over heating and reliability. Maybe their newer models are ok now, but once burned... never go back.

I currently use a netgear now, and have never had an issue. Port Forwarding works, as does my 360, 2 wireless laptops and 2 desktops connected to it.

-2 rep.

i have had one for a lil over 3 years, and still kickin. Without a problem. My 360 is hardwired to it and i have up to 4 pc's connected wirelessly. Never had a major issue with it. I want to upgrade, but why? Especially when everything is working great.

An interesting side note to this:

My brother has some wireless suveillance cameras that he has for watching the deer outside and such and the 360 screws with his reception of them as well. He has to keep it unplugged so he can get a clear picture, otherwise it's nothing but static.

We use a Linksys router at my house. It ALWAYS eventually craps out for every device on the network EXCEPT for my roommate's 360. Pisses me off. With any luck he'll get the red rings one of these days though... ;-)

lol, i guess your lucky he didn't get a PS3

Leave upnp enables on your router and make sure it's enabled on your modem.

Just hooked up my new wrt54g v8 and 2210 modem with 2 360's and one pc wirelessly. Default the modem's upnp was disabled, and you can't DZ whatever two IP's at the same time, same with port-forwarding. But both 360's NAT is "open" now.

Good luck.

Assign your Xbox a static IP from the high end of the range and see if that helps. I have the GX2 version and it doesn't seem to react well to IP conflicts.

I have a WRT54G and i have all my devices set static. I have my ports forwarded for XBOX 360 and my wireless setup as well. I have not one single issue. Wireless and Xbox have been stable ever since almost 2 years now. Never had it go down once.

Mine won't share the internet connection when the modem is hooked into the internet port...only if it's in a lan port

Linksys routers are crap, and so are dlink, i use netgear and have have never had any issues, it took 4 years for my one netgear to die, and i just replaced it with a new netgear, works great with my games.

If you want to do internet gaming then you're going to have to learn about port forwarding and for 360 internet gaming you will probably, at some point, have to learn about NAT as well. That's just how it is.

I was having the same sort of issue with my ps3 using wireless on the same router, there is a firmware update on the linksys site, install it, fixed everything up for me.

agree, disagree, disagree.

It all depends on what model you have and what you do with them. For simply pushing internet to a few computers for basic use, every one of them is but indistinguishable. Start to complicate things and shit hits the fan. I dare anyone to try to dump a hard drive from one computer to another through an older WRT54G, see how that works out for you. Made doing backups from the computers I was working on a chore, or, it would simply quit, mid-job. That was greaaaat.

They've upgraded their internal throughput a ton since that model, which I've read seems to have fixed that particular issue, but I upgraded to a Dlink Gamers Lounge after my WRT died, and would never go back to anything else. Tons of features, rock solid wireless performance throughout the house, all the port forwarding options you could ever hope for, plus gigabit switching

I won't even go into my hatred for Netgear 54g models from the last few years.

OP, setting static IP's and reading some on how your router and 360 work together would help you out tremendously. Certain routers have issues with Xbox Live, and simply have to be tweaked to operate right. Sometimes, you have to use port forwarding. Even if you don't, sometimes it gives you better performance.

Depending on what WRT version you have will alter what course of action you need to use.

Without getting techy on you, do these first: Upgrade the firmware to the latest version if you haven't, turn on UPnP, turn off your routers firewall, and set your NAT settings to the least restrictive mode possible. Halo 3 is very NAT sensitive, and will give you shit performance if you have it at a "closed" setting.

good luck, and let us know how it goes.
