360 Cooling

Since I saw the "Cooling" on top of the forum, I said what the hell. So here it goes.

I noticed where the air get's sucked in and pushed out on the 360. I wanted to cool the thing down a bit. I wanted to get some PC fans (led ones) and maybe surround the areas where you can hit the 360 directly and maybe on on the back where is sucks it out. I'm basically doing this without opening the 360 to avoid voiding the warranty.

The questions are:

1. Will this work?

2. How can I connect the fans without a PC power supply? Any chance to wire them so I can use them with the wall socket?

3. Has anyone tried to cool their 360 without opening the case?

I'm stumped. Even when I have the 360 by itself without anything around it, it gets hot as hell.

my 360 gets hot as hell but i guess its made to be that way and if ur not having any problems why would u want to add more noise.

I'm on my 2nd 360. My last one RRoD on me. So I want to avoid it as much as possible. I waited about a month to get mine back and it's not my original. I'm looking to cool it up as much as I can witout opening the case. The nooise isn't an issue for me since I game with my headphones and even then I still game without any problems with the noise.

How would I wire them? Those "Molex" plugs are the ones in a PC right? If so, how can I wire them without using a PC?

You can run them off USB? How? Also, can use those LED fans like that? Or is that too much to ask for?

Sorry for all the questions.

That's alright.

You might be able to use an LED fan... but you need to look at the technical imitations of the USB bus.

USB has 4 pins...

5V
Data+
Data-
0V

Therefore, you can leech 5v from it. It will supply up to 500ma as it's technical limit... any more and you get an "electrical overcurrent protection" warning. Therefore, the slot can supply up to 2.5w of electricity (5v x 0.5a = 2.5w if you didn't know that) Most 60mm fans at around 5v will only draw about 150-200ma of power, so you could easily get 2-3 of them from a single plug.

If you wanted LED fans, you'd have to move down to the 40mm fans with Blue LED's.

.... _____fan_
5v/___ fan___\___0v
...\____fan___/

Run em in parallel.

Sweet thanks. I'm going to try it out. I do need the usb cable correct?

Yep.

Get a cheap one, cut it in half, the red and black wires should be the power wires. make sure the other data wires are covered with electrical tape or something. They CAN NOT short to anything!

Test it on an old laptop or something first.

I don't know if this might be a stupid question or not, but say if I didn't want to cut wires and what not and just buy a power supply with the amount of fans I want. Would the power supply work with just the fans? If so, how many fans and what sizes can I use?

You could always just buy a 12v power brick to plug into the wall and wire your fans into that. Either way you're gonna be cutting some wires buddy, its no big deal.

You can always go getto style and get a big as fan and point it right at the 360. Put that big fraking fan on high and wammo insta cooling. No muss no fuss Just a nice cool 360 for about $20;)

I guess I wanted to go with the whole neon lights and shit. But we'll see what I come up with. I wanted to go the DIY route and use some LED fans and crap. But I'm not reall electronic savy. I'm alright with tools, but I don't know much about the watts, volts and other.

If you use a computer power supply you can pretty much stick as many fans on as you want.

Say the 12v line is 20a then you could power at least 30 fans. :p:p:p

Really? How would that work? That sounds like a plan. I was on my way to Tiger Direct so I'll pass by the power supply area. Like I said, I don't want to open the SexBox I mean Xbox yet. So I basically want to cool it from the outside in. And I like those LED fans. So wiring some of those up would be sick. Also, I can use that power supply for my new PC that I want to build.

So how do I go about putting the fans together with the power supply?

Why don't you just buy the cooling thing that they sell in stores if you don't want to void the warranty.

Because the Intercooler is a POS, and I don't know how beneficial the Stand actually is.

BTW, yes- you can actually run fans straight off the AC outlet with a little extra soldering (AC-DC rectifier, and a filtering capacitor across the DC terminals). The problem is, you'll be running around 12 of them in series in order to deliver the right voltage (as in, not fry all of them as soon as they are plugged in. AC current with diodes actually gets up to around 170V). My dad and I made a rig like that a few years back, he still uses it to circulate air in his workshop (woodworking).

You get any computer power supply and some 12v or 5v fans with molex connectors on then you simply plug them in and bridge the green wire with the black wire with a paper clip and the fans will start. Simple eh?

Thanks guys for the help. RoBo, when I get that power supply, I want to run the fans off the 12v. How many of the LED fans can I wire to the Power Supply? And if the power supply comes with 12v and 5v can I use both of them? All this will be going into a PC in a couple of months, so why not break it in.

:D
