Hi all. My dad is looking for a good/roughly sub $400 35mm color slide scanner so he can put them on CD. Can any of you recc' a few models that we can look at to evaluate?

TY!

I do a lot of photo scanning for pay, and have experience with two film/slide scanners.

The one I currently use is the Nikon Coolscan V ED
http://nikonimaging.com/global/products/scanner/coolscan_5/

It is the best scanner in its pricepoint though its a little high for you at $540.

Its sharp, fast, and has digital ICE which gets rid of dust much better than any software could do. If most of your Dad's slides are Kodachromes, it isn't as usefull as a feature though as its not as effective with those for some reason. It works great with most other color slide film, and is amazing with color negative film.

The other scanner I have is the Konica Minolta DiMAGE Scan Dual IV.

Its also a really good scanner for its price at only $229. It is slower than the coolscan, and lacks the digital ice, but it beat the crap out of my Epson 3170 scanner in image quality.

I'd be willing to sell you my DiMAGE Scan Dual for $150 if a more expensive scanner does not interest you. It still works as great as did when I got, its just that I need the Coolscan V ED for its features. Time is money applies to scanning very well.

Ok, thanks. I'll look into those.

I've also been seeing a lot of msg's warning not to buy the Kodak scanners, but no reasons why?

I have never heard anything about kodak scanners at all, not even that there were any. I do know they created the Digital ICE technology. I personally am not very fond of Kodak as a company, and would not buy one of their products. Its a shame to because they are one of the few american companies in this industry.

Consider the Minolta Dual Scan Elite II 5400 as well. It may not be as robust (hardware-wise and glass-wise) as the coolscan V, but it is a little less expensive and still has a lot of nice features!! Nikon's got the best glass in the business for this market.

I'm picking up a coolscan 5000 today, just for the workflow benefit. With the bulk slide feeder I can load up 50 slides and go to bed. :D
