$350 BC2 upgrade challenge...

I went from a Q6600 @ 3.6Ghz and a GTX 480 to a i7 930 at 4.3Ghz and my framerate almost doubled in BC2. It went from 40-50 to 70-90.

This is at 1920x1200 max settings and in full 32 player servers.
 
I just upgraded from a Q9550 to an i5 2500K and my BC2 experience went from mediocre-bad to pretty awesome. I wasn't expecting the CPU to make that much difference but apparently it did. I can play in eyefinity 5760x1080 at much much better framerates than i could before. I can turn on 2xAA now and turn some settings to high instead of medium and it still runs better than it did before.

edit * if you scale my res down to 1920x1080 i could always run everything at max settings at great frame rates even with the old cpu.

Hardly moot. If it can run a crossfire setup, it can definitely run a single card, can't it?

I do echo the comments of recent posts though. i5s and i7s are noticeably faster in modern games. It's simply a case that for many, the slower performance of a core 2 is still fast enough.
 
I would think the OP's CPU should hold up pretty well. I have a Phenom II x4 955 running at 3.8 along with the ASUS Matrix 5870 2gb and I get pretty good numbers in BC2 with the following setup:

I thought the Core 2 Quads were fairly close to the Phenom II's in performance.
 
Never got close to that performance level. I am going to make the next build a games only pc. No programs except for games. No internet browsing at all. Going to use this crappy dell for everything else. Going to get the fastest gpu I can afford soon. Then start saving up for a new cpu/mobo/ram/psu.

I think one of the issues I had was my HD was chopped up and packed with crap. Need to keep it clean.
 
In general terms, a 3.8Ghz Phenom II is about a 3.3-3.4Ghz Core 2 Quad (45nm). People argue they're faster in games than that but results seem pretty varied about such things.
